  1. Hello,

I have noticed that SmarterTools have released SmarterMail 7.x. Is DASP planning on making this version available to customers. I've been waiting to find out what was happening with the upgrade to version 6 (http://community.discountasp.net/showthread.php?t=8544&highlight=smartermail) but there has been no activity on this thread for several months?

Can someone provide an update on what's happening with this?

    Thanks,

    No.

A lot of the changes SmarterTools is making to SmarterMail are not necessarily things that are applicable or useful to shared hosts such as ourselves. They are aiming more at an enterprise user, to become a kind of alternative to Exchange I suppose.

It's mail, after all, there isn't much to innovate there. If you look at the changes to 7.x there are things like weather forecasts - weather forecasts? In your email client? Why?

What is it that you want to use in 6 or 7 that isn't in 5? Usually when we ask that question we don't get an answer. Sometimes people just want to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. Where mail is concerned though, unless there is a compelling reason to upgrade we will likely stay with 5 for the foreseeable future.

  3. Two way synchronization of tasks, calendars, and contacts with Outlook via Add to Outlook (2007 only)

  4. The current Sync tool does two-way sync.
It's listed in the Tools, you can D/L it from them for free.
I've even successfully used it for Hotmail sync, not just Smartermail in Outlook.

One of the guys from SmarterTools read this and pointed out that they've done more than add weather forecasts in the last two major versions. Duly noted. It wasn't a jab at them anyway, we all like those guys. Like I said, they are going after a certain market, that's all.

There are a million things we could throw at you, every gimmick, tool and app on the planet, but there is a law of diminishing return. It takes time and resources to introduce new things, and if 10, 20 or 100 of our users adopt some new thing, the resources spent to introduce it were wasted. That doesn't mean that we don't love you and want you to be happy. We just want large chunks of you to be happy. ;)

Most people want email to do what it's supposed to do; send and receive messages. And SmarterMail 5 does that. People are also very sensitive about email - they don't want interruption, they don't want change, they just want it to work. So we have to weigh whether what's being offered in newer versions is worth the resources to upgrade, and so far the answer to that is; they are not.

That doesn't mean we'll never upgrade. But right now there are no plans to do so.

  6. I got dizzy reading that :)

Well, that's appropriate considering I was drunk when I posted it.

    (Not really, calm down.)

I hope you upgrade smarter mail. Imap was my reason for coming here years ago. Email is probably why I will leave. Need contact syncing, imap that actually works with smart phones, etc.

We are in the preliminary stages of a SmarterMail upgrade. I can't say when we may proceed, but it's being worked on.

  10. To little to late

Looks like smarter mail is broke with firefox and smartermail supports two versions back. Since discountasp.net is more than 2 versions back, we have unsupported email from the vendor.

we are aware of this problem and we are working on upgrading SmarterMail to version 8.
