Hi Guys, just the perennial DNS question about DNS / domain pointers, apologies if its already been answered.

I have a host hosting my DNS and email, I want to move the email hosting portion of it to my discountASP account yet still maintain the address. If I alter site A DNS MX record to point to discountASP, do I require a domain pointer on discountASP.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

now, If I'm not misunderstanding you, you have another site with another hosting company and would like to point the MX record to DASP?

It simply won't work because there's no host header info of your domain in our server. You could, however use the mail portion as an domain pointer email alias

If your account has a Root Domain Pointer (an additional domain that points to your main site), you can activate an alias-based email service for the pointer domain. What that means is any email address on your primary domain will also accept messages sent to the same address on the pointer domain.

For example, let's say your primary domain is domain.com, and you use domain2.com as a domain pointer. If you set up the email address info@domain.com, that mailbox will also accept mail for info@domain2.com.

The mail service for pointer domains is alias-only, so you cannot set up a separate address on domain2.com. Any domain2.com addresses have to point to an email address on the primary domain name. sales@domain2.com will not work unless sales@domain.com exists.

Note that if the same message is sent to info@domain.com and info@domain2.com you will receive two copies of the message in the info@domain.com mailbox.

For information on activating Domain Pointer Email Alias service see this Knowledge Base article.
