Not that it's much to do with the original question but has anybody used the above example and got it to work? My app polls the Internet but nothing gets downloaded.........

I don't think you can do this on the server because i think it would require administrative right for this to work properly.

Is Directory Browsing on by default? I want to allow a standalone app to detect when a new version is available and am working to the .NET Application Updater example (http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/windowsforms/appupdater.aspx) and it says that Directory Browsing will need to be enabled.

Yes, directory browsing is on by default. If you need to hide the contents, then just upload a default page to the directory.

It's not updating on the server, but reading an XML file (I can do that OK!) and if a newer release is on the server the app downloads it from the server. I still can't get it to work - most annoying.

Are you sure about this? The article just mentions Directory Browsing must be on.

I didn't go through the whole article, but i think in order for an application to update s/w on the server, you would require Admin right.
