Is it just me or is it take a while for emails to be received? It's kind of annoying slow... I didn't see anyone else saying anything about it, so it might just be me.

I agree. I just setup my email, and its working fine sending within, but anything outside has yet to get there and its been 2 hours from 2 different domains.

That could be the "magic" of greylisting at work. To try to stop spam, the server initially rejects it and waits for the sending server to retry. Presumably spammers don't retry, so if a second message is sent it's considered good. Unfortunately it adds a delay to the time it takes to get the mail, depending on the sending server's retry timing. Personally, I don't think it's worth the effort, but that's just me. With a good spam filter, that stuff can be filtered after it's received by adding headers to the message or appending something to the subject (like SmarterMail's spam filtering does) and then the user can decide what to do with it. It's not like you save bandwidth or anything by greylisting - you've actually at least doubled it because of the retries.
Anyway, you might try going into the domain admin settings and disable greylisting for an account or two and try your tests again to see if that's what's adding your delay.

I am almost certain that it is greylisting at work here. Grey listing is very effective in deterring spam. I have my own domain which I had for over 10 years and I get close to 1000 spam per day. With greylisting, it blocked almost 900 of them. As with anything in life, there's give and take, Greylisting will delay email delivery.
Note that you can disable Greylisting on a per email account basis
- Login to the email account
- Goto Settings -> My Settings
- In the Mailbox tab, there's a check box for disable Bypass GreyListing
- Remeber to hit Save button.

I just disabled it and now my mail arrives quickly enough. Prior to bypassing greymail, I had a 30 minute delay in email messages from a potential client this afternoon, and I think I blew the sale because of the communication breakdown. I know email was not intended to be an instant messaging application, but we've become accustomed to fast turn-arounds in email messaging. I often use email at work, rather than picking up a phone or walking the stairs to visit another office. Fast turnaround has become essential for a good percentage of users. Glad I could bypass it and I'm also glad that I don't have to shop for a new ISP now.

One cool feature with SmarterMail is that you can disable Greylisting on a per mailbox basis.
Greylist is a very effective spam deterence feature (cut over 85% of spam based on our statistic), I wouldn't recommend it disabling it for the whole domain. I would disable it for say, a sale@ account.

I just got a really important e-mail that was more than 7 (seven) hours delayed! Before that I got another one that was even longer delayed.
It is not a very smart move to change the default behaviour of something as important as e-mail.
If you are a user that has no spam protection (and obviously DiscountAsp must believe that that is the majority of its users), you may want to use the new features offered.
But why is DiscountAspforcing this on ALL of us? If someone wants to use itfine, but why do I have to scramble to figure out how to switch it off, clean up all the valid messages I have got with a spam warning attached to the e-mail subject, and now go hunting looking for reasons why the e-mail arrives a whole bussiness day late?
Please think about what defaults you start up with when you introduce a new system. The guiding principle should be to avoidany inconveniences at all costs for your clients, right?
Not cool.

Hi Guys,
I've got a similar problem of slow email, but mines via an alias. I have the address forward to my gmail account.
Anyone else have the same problem?

[quote]The guiding principle is to provide stable service for all of our clients. To that end, greylisting by default is the most sensible option. We do consider changes carefully, and weigh the impact that they have. I understand that you are upset at having to make the changes to remove greylisting, but whichever way we went with those defaults, a segment of our users would be unhappy that they had to make changes.
[quote]Our initial beta testing showed that the greylisting being active by default was preferable to the majority of users, so that is how we are proceeding with the migration. It isn't perfect for everyone, but unfortunately, the alternative would not be perfect for everyone either.
[quote]Sorry.
[quote]But on the positive side, it is configurable. No one is locked in to the defaults.

I just opened Outlook and waited 10 mins before my email was delivered.
Mail downloading speed is unrelated to greylisting.
If you experience long download times you may be experiencing a network latency issue - in other words, internet delays between your location and ours. A traceroute to the mail server performed when you see the delay will shed more light on that (see: http://kb.discountasp.net/article.aspx?id=10197).
Another possible cause is a corrupt or malformed message header causing the download to hang. If the long mail download time continues, you can usually remove the problematic message by logging in to your account using webmail and deleting the message there.
