How does IMAP work?

I am using IMAP from Outlook 2003.

I see all my emails in Inbox from webclient of smarter mail.
I see all my emails in Inbox from Outlook 2003
Emails sent from webclient get synchronized to Outlook 2003 Sent Items
Emails sent from Outlook 2003 are NOT seen in the Sent Items of web client?

Why is it so ? I thought IMAP should synchronize everything?

No. This is not how it works. I think Outlook sent item is stored locally.
