SQL 2008 Reporting Services

Now that SQL Server is being hosed live, when can we expect the 2008 Reporting Services to be implemented? I have had trouble in the past with my SQL 2000 Reporting Service reliability and want to upgrade both my data and my reports to SQL 2008.

We cannot give any timeframe on SQL 2008 RS right now. Our main focus up to now has been to get SQL 2008 out as quickly as possible after official release.

Hopefully sooner rather than later. I also can't upgrade to SQL Server 2008 until Reporting Services are supported.

I am also waiting for SSRS 2008. The new charting capabilities are awsome. Is there at least a plan to impliment this in the near future?

We got a lot of projects going on and we can't do everything at the same time and so we need to prioritize. And its not just a matter of turning on a feature - for these projects there is usuallybackend infrastructure work, control panel work, billing work, knowledge base article generation, and staff training involved. All this takes time, planning and resources.

We also want to stay away from setting a date and then delaying the launch, as you know, there are always unanticipated stuff that always comes up.

We hear you on your interest in SQL 2008 RS. But at this time, we just can't give any definitive timeframe.

I have just recently joined and automatically asumed that SQL 2008 Reporting would be available almost immediatly. I am stuck. I dont want to use 2005 as I take advantage of the new gauges with 2008. What alternative reporting mechanisms do you have? Can I use Crystal. If so explain themechanism to install the CR2008 Runtime.


What is timeframe for RS2008? There must be one??????

I do not expect the ETAto be exact (I am in dev as well, s&%t happens), I just need to know if it will be done within the next2 months. This will enable me to make a decision for the way forward.


In terms of CR reporting? Do you have any information for me? This facility does not make use of SQL or IIS as it has its own runtime for VS2008. I just need the facility to be able to deploy the runtime or I can send you the runtime to you to deploy. It only takes a few minutes and CR is enabled ona specific site.


I know that you may charge for SQL Reporting Services and this will mean loss ofrevenue, howeverI will change and subscribe to SQL Reporting Services when available. The Dundas gauges are just so much better than CR's basic gauges.

I've spent the past few weeks experimenting with version 9 of the ReportViewer.
Same as many of the guys here I'd love to see SQL 2008 reports, but...
For now I can help with Microsoft reports, version 9, in ASP.NET with and without a SQL Server.
(With any data source, even XML.)

As for CR...We can not use CR's here.

2k8 RS will definitely not be available this quarter (we have a pretty busy quarter already and doubt that we can sqeeze this in).

If we do this, the earliest time would be Q1 09.

I have just subscribed to DASP and testing the set-up before we move the applications over. We will be using VS 2008 for new work. We are happy with rs2005 functionality, but reports built with VS2008 will not deploy to rs2005. Is there any way round this short of hosting the reports elsewhere?

Your reports can be made to use any viable data source and run in ASP.NET pages.

The problem isn't viewing the reports, the problem is deploying them to the server in the first place. Reports created (or edited) with VS2008 cannot be uploaded (deployed) to an rs2005 server. That means that users of VS2008 (like me) cannot use DASP for hosting reports.

This can be very confusing John but I can give you example code of SQL Server 2005 reports running on DASP servers with no Report Server, actually with and without the Report Server, same report but different flavors.

I'm not sure about that, never got parameters working with the non-reportserver pages.
I asked some of the Microsft Devs last year and none of them had any solutions.
Unless I'm mistaken this will be available in the 2008 Web version but we don't have access to that here yet.

I believe that report parameters only work when the report is accessed remotely from a report server, and I don't think that 2008 is any different. That's why report server 2008 is important - without rs2008 we cannot use visual studio 2008 for reports with parameters.

This post will be updated once we have any word on this.

Also most of us here have worked for previous hosting companies that simply deploy services without testing them and fix problems and tweaks as issues arise. We are against this method of deploying any service. As this would cause more problems for our customers and headaches for ourselves.

I signed up for SQL 2008 when I moved my site from another hosting service to yours because I wanted to be on the highest supported version, now that I am looking at using SSRS, I find out that I can't because it has not been implemented.

What will it take for somebody at DiscountAsp.Net to decide that your customers really want this and to make it happen?

We're still very busy. We would like to offer up a lot of things, but as Eric pointed out, we have to prioritize. We know there are users who want 2008 reporting service, but unfortunately, we can't do everything at once.

Next month it will be 1 year since SSRS 2008 was requested. Could DASP make some sort of commitment rather than kicking the ball down the road indefinitely? It obviously isn't in the support roadmap at the moment.

I don't foresee it happening until Q4 at the soonest, I'm afraid. We have too many active projects at the moment to commit to any concrete time frame. Until we actually put it into development that will, unfortunately, continue to be the answer to the question of 'when.' Sorry.
