gosh that dot net nuke looks nice. How easy is it for users to administer? For instance, if I wanted to set up a community portal with individual areas for each "group", how easy would it be for a novice to change the content on the pages?

DNN is a fairly rich app
I think you can set up permission to allow user to administer the site content.
Try install it and play w/ it. The installation is not all that bad.

as stated in the thread, i tested installing dnn 2.0 and was able to get it to work without making any security change.
From the error you posted on the asp.net forum, i think you may be running into a bug w/ DNN.
--> DotNetNuke.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
I suggest you try DNN install v 1.0.1 which is a stable version. Afterall, 2.0 just came out of beta about a week or so ago.
Good luck.

Greetings all. I have been trying, unsuccessfully I might add, for the past several days install and configure DNN 2.0 Beta. I see that it has been accomplished on discountasp.net but would really appreciate if anyone, from a users perspective, could pass along what they did to get theirs working.
I just posted on asp.net this morning but thought it might be nice to check with fellow developers hosting here that might be able to pass along host specific instructions.
Here is my post on asp.net
http://www.asp.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?tabindex=1&PostID=486809
Here are a few recurring issues I've been having, without getting too specific, with the hopes that perhaps someone has already been through this and could pass along what they learned.
I repeatedly have problems uploading the code to install. I frequently get errors that it was unable to upload a file, whether using WS_FTP or My Network Place through XP.
The rest of the errors are out on the link to asp.net. Specifically related to discountasp.net, has anyone had security specific changes that needed to be made in order for this to work? I think that might be part of my problem but I just can't figure out what part I'm over looking.
Greatly appreciate any assistance.
Thanks!!
Jack

Hello Bruce. I had read this thread and noted that you installed 2.0. Not sure why, just got the impression that you might be an admin here at discountasp.net, so I thought perhaps you had installed with rights greater than I might have by default. Either way, even trying to follow the kb article recently posted here about installing DNN, I still continue to have problems.
I admit, that as I've seen posted by others having problems, just starting out I was hopeful to start with the newest version, even if it is Beta. Top that off with how easily it installed locally, I was under the impression I was going to have a fairly easy time.
I'm taking your advice, I was on the breaking point of going to the current version anyway and thus my postings, because I was ready to throw in the towel this morning. I've downloaded the current production version and attempting to upload to the server. (Another problem I have is uploading, seems to error out fairly frequently. Might be a firewall problem here at home, per support.)
Thanks again for taking the time to reply, hope it was ok to post on the same thread. I assumed it would make more sense to stick to this thread, since they were related.
Thanks.
Jack

Jack,
i'm one of the developer here, SA usually don't know much about applications [:D]
when we test application, we make sure we do it from the customer's perspective and not to invoke our Super Power :> I even FTP all the DNN file up using a customer level login.

Hello again Bruce. Not sure if I should start a new thread or if it is ok to continue on here. Appreciate the explaination of how you test, excellent standards to follow. I know you said you installed the DNN application, but out of curiousity, are you using it as part of a site?
My problem is this. I am just about flustered beyond hope of getting anything to work. Support here has been great but I don't want to have to keep running to them every time I screw up something trying to deploy DNN 1.
The best luck I've had so far is setting it all up locally, while pointing at my sql db here at discountasp. When I try to deploy it, I tend to get strange errors. I'll post the current one at the end of my post here. I have researched this one before and something about recompiling too many times in too short of a time, but even the fix that worked before, renaming the offending file and replacing, isn't working.
What I guess I'm really asking for, is if anyone here at discountasp is currently using DNN for their site, or more specifically site(s), I would greatly appreciate your input on how you manage your uploads, changes, etc. In other words, do you work locally, and when everything is ready, you copy your changes to the web? I'm using VS.Net 2003, although for the sake of getting this working for now, I don't have to, if that is part of the problem.
Any feedback or tips on how best to use DNN on discountasp from those currently using DNN would be greatly appreciated. I hate to throw in the towel, I really think DNN is the perfect solution for my needs, but after more than a week of trying to get it working (first beta 2.0 and now current release) I'm at my wits end and can't believe that it is really this difficult.
Here is the current error.

Just thought I would add an update. Decided to give up on the Front Page Extensions and disabled. Once done, no longer had problems with uploading files or errors indicated in previous post.
Thanks

When we test application, we just make sure it install fine and the general sections work.
The error you are seeing looks the the dll is unmatched.
In general, most of our user develop and test their applicatino on their local machine and upload when it is fully tested.

Bruce,
Do you need to have SQLServer on the account for DNN to work or can it use MSDE or MS Access? I have tried installing with Access on a local computer without luck. I have only had success with a full SQL Server 2000 available.
Thanks.

MS SQL.
DNN is kinda weird, they incorporated these settings in the web.config for Access. but in the documentation they say access is not yet supported.
