Buy a Sub Domain or Register a new domain?

Discussion in 'Open Discussion' started by anigalla.net, May 5, 2009.

  1. Hi.. currently we are having a domain registered and being hosted at discountasp.net
now to add a sub domain to it, discountasp charges are $5 per month.
so we are thinking of registering a new domain with $8 per year and use
Google apps or something like that for free through out the year..
but in a dilemma, are there any Pros & Cons by doing this? based on
your advise we have to make some decision.

please give your opinions.. thank you. anigalla.net

  2. to Buy a Sub Domain or Register a New Domain?

    Hello..

we are having a site being hosted at discountasp.net for $120 per year.
now planning to add on a site to that, but for adding a sub domain, discountasp.net charges are $5 per month.

so we are thinking of registering a new domain with $8 per year and use
Google apps for free through out the year.. but in a dilemma, are there any Pros & Cons by doing this?

    Please suggest.. thank you

  3. I'm not quite sure exactly what you are asking. If you are planning to buy a new domain name with Google, and you want it to resolve to your Discountasp hosting account, you will need to order a domain pointer. This is because by default all accounts are associated to a shared IP address. This means you cannot readily point any domain names back to your account without ordering the Unique IP addon which will also give you subdomain capabilities.

  4. Hi Raymond, thanks for the reply.
Lets say i have a site "abcd.com" being hosted at discountasp.net and now i wanted to created one more web application(http://www.abcdcom/blog) in the sub folder of abcd.com root directory and wanted to name it as a sub domain "hello.abcd.com", for which i have been asked to bear charges of $5 per month to add on..
So i thought of register a new domain, let's say "abcd.info" and do URL forwarding to the new web application in the sub folder of "abcd.com", which means the end user is unaware of all this but i am still pointing a page URL belongs to abcd.com (something like this: http://www.abcd.com/blog/default.aspx).

my idea is to maintain the site rank and link popularity which belongs to my abcd.com instead of having some google juice with abcd.com and some with abcd.info ..
so, now my question is, if i register abcd.info and do URL forwarding, will it effect my page rank of abcd.com (or) will it be still maintained because at the end the page being loaded is from a sub folder of abcd.com (http://www.abcd.com/blog/today.aspx) ??

hope this time the question is more clear compared to last time. thank you

  5. thought by doing this
    * can close my charges in less than $10 per year instead of paying $60 per year..
    * can have additional registered domain abcd.info, so that others couldn't register it in future.. (it is common that companies want to maintain abcd.com, abcd.net, abcd.info etc., so that they will have their desired domain name under their control right?)
