View Full Version : What is wrong with these browsers?

Firefox 3.5:
Didn't they supposedly "fix" the memory issues? Every version claims memory improvements but the thing is still eating a half gig of ram with only 3 tabs open. 500MB for a browser? Visual Studio is using 130 at this very moment - but firefox wants 555!?!?
IE8:
How does this thing not have a built in spell checker by now? How is that even possible? No spell checker??? Really? This is a new browser right? But no spell checker?
I guess spelling checkers need 350MB of memory to run :p

...Agree ;-)
I've tweeted about the FF mem usage.
Have been using FF for DASP and Twitter, IE8 for default links and everything Msft.
Google Chrome is still what http://www.friv.com/ is for, safe for kids. :-)

...Wow, was not aware of that. Using Chrome 2.0.172.39 right now.
Just put Office 2010 on here btw, so far so good.

...I stopped using Softimage XSI when I donated my SDKNUTS site to that Canadian University.
Never used it on Vista, haven't been doing any 3D Modeling but if I get into XNA I will.
This Vista machine btw is 100% devoted to DASP. ;-)

Firefox is consistently the biggest memory user on all my computers, but the only time I've seen it go over 250mb or so is when it crashed...or when I left our helpdesk open over the weekend. ;) And I typically have five or six tabs open.
Seriously, 555mb? Sounds like user error. And if I know you, it is.
I kid, I kid.

...I had 3.51 climb Vista to a crawl, looked and it was chowing more than everything on the system, 3 open tabs, Facebook, Twitter and DASP forums.
I've trimmed it down a bit now, tossed Facebook. ;-)

I have 1 picture of you in each tab. ;-)
Helpdesk - intranet - and this forum. I think I figured it out though - get back to you guys later.

...Ran same tests today for Brian Mains after I upgraded to FF3.52, Sys mem still stinks:

@brianmains Testing two sites right now, Vista, FF3.52 and IE8...FF 92,132k, IE8 30,484k (Same two tabs in each, Live toolbar in IE8.)

Upon further review and careful analysis by the instant replay referee - the issue is related to plugins. Joe and I looked and its pretty bad.
Weather being the biggest loser eating almost 40MB. I have a few others, that for example show the site's IP address, Firebug, and some other stuff I THOUGHT I would use for work. Then again like most things - I end up forgetting and just doing things the old fashioned way.
So - Disabled all the plugins and all is well.
Is firefox off the hook? Not really - it is their plug-in framework. Granted, Im sure they have good reasons.
IE - Still no excuse for not having a spell checker.

...lol, it's like we're sitting on the grass looking past our cowboy boots down the barrels of our rifles...just popping bottles. ;-)
Yup, many of the popular addons in FF are currently known for this.
Reason I tested with the Live toolbar in IE8, which is not perfect but is light on sys mem.
But alas...FF3.52 on my Vista Ultimate system is a Default installation, nothing added, all addons disabled. Go figure eh? ;-)
Weather being the biggest loser eating almost 40MB.Really? I uninstalled firebug a while back and have seen a pretty consistent 100mb drop in Firefox memory use. But maybe that's just me.
Anyway, yeah, the plugins are dogs, most of them. It's just bloat. The same reason your O/S uses more memory all by itself than your first computer's hard drive capacity (for those whose first computers had hard drives anyway). "Hey, 4 gigs of RAM! Let's see if this thing can wash the dishes while we're working in Excel..."
Of course there's probably already an iphone app that washes dishes...
