I tried to publish my site using Build -> Publish <site namespace>. When the publish dialog shows up, I type http://<URL> and click "Publish".
The DiscountAsp site asks for credentials which I supply.
The site is uploaded and VWD shows that it published successfully.
The site files don't show up. The site doesn't load, and I can't see the published files when I use a client FTP login.
I try to publish using ftp://<URL> and it works perfectly.
Can someone explain what the problem is, and how I can use HTTP publishing?

Hi,
Did you specify a Directory for the FTP transfer?
If so, leave that area blank next time.
(That's about all I can think of right now.)
All the best,

I published to ftp://<URL>/ which is the root directory. This worked fine.
I tried to publish to http://<URL>/ which didn't work.

Hi,
FTP is the File Transfer protocol, HTTP is a Hyper Text transfer protocol.
Stick with FTP. ;-)
All the best,

Perhaps. But then why does Visual Studio allow HTTP publishing with Frontpage Extensions? Instead of ftp:// try http:// and it will ask you for credentials.
What I want to know is what is different with DiscountASP that you don't offer HTTP publishing.
Has anyone else had this issue?

You can use HTTP publishing if you're on a Windows 2003 - IIS6 server, you just have to make sure that FrontPage extensions are enabled through the Control Panel.
We generally never recommend using Frontpage extensions however, because it can cause other types of issues, such as permissions.
Our IIS7 servers no longer offer FrontPage as well... Microsoft no longer supports it, which is why it's not even included in the newer MS Office package
