Speed in the UK

I am considering signing up to host a none business critical site. After reading many reviews the overall rating it good. However, there were a number of reviews that mentioned poor speed.

As a developer I can live with the odd outage but slow access speeds would be too frustrating.

I have two questions :

Can anyone comment on the speed in the UK when hosted on the London servers?

When did the London servers go live? This may have been after some of the negative speed reviews.
