I install starter kits free of charge

Discussion in 'ASP.NET Starter Kits' started by DaveCS, Nov 2, 2008.

  1. Need a hand installing your favorite starter kit(s)?

    It's been almost a year since I started helping folks out. I don't work for DASP, I don't have giant help file to look at. I just install, give you the installed source code and communicate how I did it.

    My track record is flawless to date and turn around times have been as low as 30 mintues.

    If you just want to get it done free and learn how I'm your guy.

    Take care, Dave

    Update. wisemx has taken the step forward to install your kits. I responded to 2 people on 12/17/08 and will be doing installs. For the rest please contact wisemx for your installs.

    Thanks again, Dave

  5. It might appear that way to those who will not take a bit of time and extend themselves to others.

    Believe it or not, people in this day and age still help others out without monetary gain. I have never received a single dollar for any of my installs for DASP customers.

    The reason I posted the topic is simply that I don't have the time to look through all of the threads for people that need help.

    My personal feelings are that it's better to just get an application up and working. This allows the person who has already paid for hosting have a working application and learn later.
    Personally, I am opposed to paying for something then try to make it work for me. That is a common problem on the board and I think it's safe to say many share my view.

    Posting a few lines of code or throwing links at people is fine but it is nowhere as efficient as my free solution.

    Thanks for your concern, Dave

  6. WiseMx...

    I could use your help... Istarted with an ASP starter kit.The application reads and writes from(2) local database files: ASPDBNET and PERSONAL in the developement enviornment on my PC. When hosting I consolidated these into one single database. I have thefollowingconnection strings:

  7. Hi,
    Try clearing and removing every string. ("Clear" is only used once, Add and Remove once each time.)

  8. Mark,

    Thanks for your reply. I get the same result but adding the <clear/> and removing each string and readding. I alsogot rid of the ";" after the password.I changed the server to: 'sql2k515.discountasp.net' after that attempt failedbecause this is the address I use in Management Studio (minus the "tcp:"). I have been just cut an copying the connection string from the control panal. This error eludes me to think that I am not communicating with the database server. I'm sure I have the correct cedentials in the connection string?!

    Anymore suggestions?

    Thanks!

  9. Support seems to think I am attempting to connect to a SQL Server Exress instance. Ummm.. I'm using the login information to my SQL Server 2005 where I have setup the membership schema. Does this make any sense?

  10. This is the result of hi hacking a thread.

    wisemx, I believe you have a teaching philosophy of 'you need to do xyz to make the site work' whilst mine is you now have a working site; compair with the non-working to learn.

    You need to do xyz usually results in people becoming discouraged. When a person has paid for hosting and reads a thread 'I install starter kits etc..' they expect it to be installed. Not xyz.

    Mark, If you feel like you need to take the thread over I will stand down but I demand you do as the title says.

    Can't we all just get along?

    DaveCS, you have to realize that 99% of the people you fix something for will never, ever investigate any further or compare it to a non-working installation. They will just use it, then need help again next time it breaks. If they have to go through the steps to fix it themselves the first time, they are much more likely to be able to fix it themselves if it happens again. At least they will know where to start.

    That isn't just wisemx's philosophy, it's ours too. That's why the forum is here. To teach. If we show someone how to do something here it doesn't just benefit them, it benefits everyone else reading the thread, and everyone who will find it in the future. If you fix something for someone you've helped that person, but the next person with the same problem doesn't benefit from that.

    I'm sure you understand.

  12. I've tried to install theClassified Ads starter kit at least three times without success because it depends on MS SQL Server. I could not get MS SQL Server to recognize the instance in Visual Web Developer. This forum is devoted to supporting applications written for asp.net and not MS SQL Server. I've search the Internet and also Microsofts tech support knowledge base for help with the SQL Server issue without success. I found many threads regarding user frustration with installing SQL Server with VWD so I'm not alone with this problem.

    If it wasn't for Dave's help I would not be a customer of discountasp.net again (returning customer). I appreciate his help and know enough about the programming language (asp) to handle most tech issues.

    Just my two cents and my personal appreciation for Daves help.

  13. I agree with pdfpublisher.</o:p>
    </o:p>
    I am trying to install DotNetNuke without success. I would like to know how to do the install myself but my primary goal is to have a software framework running within which I can drop in my specific applications and not to become very knowledgeable on how IIS or SQL Server is configured. If there were explict (and accurate) instructions for the installs, I could probably be successful, but in this case the installation instructions provided by DiscountASP and DotNetNuke do not agree and I don't have the knowledge to determine which is correct or how to modify one to get it to work. </o:p>
    </o:p>
    One of the big draws of DiscountASP was the claim that the community can help. Unless there is proof that someone is trying to scam other users, I think DiscountASP should welcome any help that is out there. In the end of the day, we don't care where the help comes from. Our need is to resolve our problems quickly. Having others in the community offer free assistance is also a motivator for others of us to also give back and take time to help others.</o:p>
    </o:p>
    Please also note, that to many of us who do not normally get involved with installing software, a lot of the "hints" as to what we can solve our problems ourselves areas cryptic as were they written in Chinese. We need hints that are written for lay people who want to use software and not become infrastructure/operations specialists.
    </o:p>
    Having said all that, if anyone can help me get DotNetNuke installed in my domain that has an existing non-DotNetNuke application running, I would be thankful.</o:p>

  14. I do understand your point.

    You need to understand my position. I know for a fact that most people get started then end up stuck and quit. I also understand that 99% of the people offering help post snips or concepts. Snips and concepts usually do not help the lay person and possibly just add to the confusion.

    If you want to force customers to learn in lieu of providing a solution then so be it. I am not in a role to question it. Do I feel that it's good business practice? No.

    Lastly, stewardship was beat into me during college. That I can't help.

    No one is going to try to prevent you from installing starter kits for people if you want to do so. I was only making the company's policy clear, explaining why we will send someone to the forum here rather than fix their code or install their component, etc.There is nothing wrong with doing it for someone if you enjoy that.
