  1. I'm thinking of moving from sql 2012 to sql 2014 - and wondered if i can connect to it from visual studio 2010 using sql client 2008 (not 2008 R2). looks like it needs an encrypted connection. does anyone have any experience trying to connect to it from 2014?

The only thing I've seen in the past is when a customer tries to connect to a SQL 2014 database using an older SQL Server Management Studio is different type of errors when trying to do different things. The only way to resolve it is by upgrading the SQL Server Management Studio to 2014.

So I believe if you're using a SQL 2008 R2 database locally. You might need to upgrade to SQL 2014 to avoid any possible issues.
