Bit rate throttling?

Discussion in 'Windows / IIS' started by streamingse, Feb 12, 2010.

  1. Is bit rate throttling happening from the servers? I can't seem to get more than about 350kbits/s per user.

  2. Just to be clear, bit rate throttling is not a supported feature. Also, Im assuming you are saying that you encoded at a higher rate.

Depending on your location 350k is actually pretty good. To be frank, streaming services does not youtube make. Take a look at akamai to see what really goes into making high speed content available to every user in every location.

  3. Ah I see; 350kbits/s.

I joined you because you said you supported IIS Smooth Streaming - which you do, but only the lowest quality stream will ever be played at those sort of bit rates, making the Smooth Streaming pointless.

Thanks anyway, will find somewhere else.

  4. I think you misunderstood. We are not capping. You can encode and serve at whatever speed you like. As always though, internet latency will play a part.

Based on your location, your connection, etc., etc.

As Chuck clarified, nothing is throttled server side. But data could leave our network at 100 gigabits and still drip into someone's browser at 100k.

    Try this.

I just ran it and got a 9225 kbps download result. 25 times faster than what you are reporting.

But the office I'm sitting in is only 50 miles or so from the servers, and we have a gig pipe coming in to the office, so you would expect that kind of result. The farther away you are and smaller your "pipe," the slower the response is going to be.

That has nothing to do with our network or servers, of course.

This is the same test done from our European data center.

I get a 1762 kbps download from that location, which you would also expect, being that I am more than 5000 miles away from those servers.
