I remember the last time DiscountASP.Net got hit by a DDoS attack and I also remember reading that they spent a lot on not letting something like that happen again.

I understand that there is no real defense against very large attacks, but I would like to know if you have a policy on how big the attack can be before you black hole the IP that is being targetted?

this really depends on the situation. Usually we will null route the IP if the traffic began to affect other sites.

Thanks Bruce. In your experience, are DDoS attacks getting more common?

Are you guys well versed on different ways to fight them ?

Actually, not really. We have not seen a big one for a while.

When you tell a host you expect to be DDoSed, it doesn't generally endear you to them, you realize that, right? No one wants to deal with that. Your enemies should not be the host's problem.

Whenever someone asks questions like yours it's not a good sign. Just being straight with you.

At no stage did I tell anyone that I expect my site to be DDoS'ed. The uptime of my site is critical to my customers and I have to investigate the potential of DiscountASP being taken down as part of my disaster recovery plan.

It has happened once already and I want to be more prepared next time.

Like I said in my earlier post, we have not seen any major scale ddos attack for quite sometime.

We have also added additional filtering capability with another major DDos Mitigation service, Staminus.

The title of the thread, "What size DDoS attack before your Null Route my site?" gave me the idea you were asking specifically about your site. Nothing personal. It looks like I based my reply on the thread subject and skipped over your first sentence. Mea culpa.

For the record, we do get that question from people whose sites are consistent DDoS targets and are looking for new hosting. Naturally, very few hosts are going to welcome such a site.
