  1. Hi folks –

How often does DiscountASP.NET update 3rd party apps? For example, Orchard is at 1.2 whereas the DiscountASP.NET version is at 1.1.

I’m not pushing, just asking. (I am ignorant about Orchard, learning as i go.)

  2. We review applications regularly. It can take some time to update everything however. Generally speaking, we update things about once a month. However some applications may take much longer. It just depends on what needs to be done to accommodate an application. Sometimes for various reasons, applications are updated in a way that wont allow us to support them.

  3. Egads! Do you have any recommendations as to apps to avoid? How do we evaluate a package so that we're always on the upgrade path?

  4. That would be a good feature Peter.
For example, a list of Apps that can possibly chew up server resources.

It is hard for us to recommend any particular apps because they all have their own strength and weakness.

We have done basic testing with all the new apps we make available in the web app gallery.

I would strongly suggest that once the Web Application Gallery is used to install something, the application should be upgraded manually. I would not rely on a new version in the Gallery to do an upgrade, since there could be things you need to be aware of or back up or otherwise protect when upgrading a third-party application.

In a lot of cases, sure, you can install over an existing installation to upgrade. Most modern apps are designed that way, where your customizations live outside the core application files. But it would be painful to find out the hard way that it isn't the case for a particular application.
