  1. I am a UK potential customer looking for a host for a new web project. Initially the users will be UK based. I like what i see at discountasp.net
but im concerned about latency across the atlantic. I wont have hardly any graphics on the site, it is mainly MS SQL 2005 database orientated.

Would welcome any Uk based customers on this forum providing any experience of good/bad performance.

    Many thanks

Have you tried connect to our site? Do you see latency? You can expect similar speed.

  4. Bruce,

Thanks for your reply. Yes i have looked at your site a number of times recently. The speed is pretty good, is this the same speed i can expect
with a site of my own ? (subject to what i have on my site but wont have graphics, (mainly SQl server access populating grids)

    Thanks

  5. Frankly the best way to determine this is to perform a ping and traceroute test to our domain www.discountasp.net.

From there you can view what the results are. In general you will see an increase in response once the signal starts crossing the Atlantic. It is normal to see the response go from 70 - 80 ms to 100 + ms. Obviously if the response starts hitting past the 200 mark then mostly a network disruption is occurring. Either on our backbone, your ISP's backbone, or a misconfigured router.

We do have numerous accounts that we host were the customers are in the UK. For the most part the speed of the connection to our server is more then enough to provide them the features needed to do what they are trying to implement.

  6. Hiya Chris

I'm based in the UK and have been with discountasp.net since June 2005. I have been extremely impressed with their service. Prior to that I was with innerhost who were abysmal and prior to that it was with a UK company but can't remember their name.

I own or manage 7 commercial websites and they are all hosted with discountasp.net.

What impresses me most is the support. I ask a technical question and usually get a response immediately. With my old host, innerhost, I usually got several automated replies before a human would tell me it was my fault.

The support at discountasp have always been extremely helpful which I think is very important for the security of my websites. They also reply 24/7 which is helpful for us in the UK.

My main website is http://www.globaldialysis.com which has over 1 million page views per month. It has had very little downtime - negligible.

The control panel is very easy to use and I particularly like to the list of free asp libraries. They are also on top form with upgrading their software and removing software that causes problems.

Overall, I would say that discountasp.net is incredibly good value for money.

  7. Russell,

Many Thanks for your reply, i was hoping a UK customer would do so.

I agree the support is good as ive already experienced this even before signing up!.

Looked at your site, and i connected just as quick as most other sites, so things are looking good. Do you use SQL server with the site?

You say you have multiple sites. Do you have to have separate hosting accounts or do you have sub folders and each domain
pointing to its own folder ? - i saw something on the forum where someone was quering this but apparantly there is a way to do it but support
werent forthcoming. With my currentISP i have a script in the route which redirects to a folder default.aspx dependiing on the domain URL
requested. This works well and assumed this was common with every hosting site.

I have researched some other uk hosting sites, but there arent many that provide .net 3.5 / Ajax and up to date technologies. Not that i may need these immediately, but its great to know they are available when i need them

    Thanks again for you help

    Chris Anderson
