Comment spam is quickly becoming A BIG problem. 92% of all comments are spam!!! Not only is every blog online getting spammed, but so are simple contact forms. The guys over at Akismet have created a solution for this, an anti-spam-webservice. I've wrapped this up into an easy to use .Net 2.0 Library. Check it out here...http://www.joel.net/code/akismet.aspx let me know what you think... Joel Thoms DiscountASP.NET http://www.DiscountASP.NET
We need tools like this, great job bro. Let's also team up and handle spam rather than simply throwing an exception. When it's a known spam source let's put them in infinite space or redirect them to the FBI's Most Wanted list. (Time to fight back.)
Interesting.. I wonder if this can be used in forum software. I started to see some spamming in our forum. Bruce DiscountASP.NET www.DiscountASP.NET
Yes it can. You just have to plug it into where you want it. Joel Thoms DiscountASP.NET http://www.DiscountASP.NET
So what are they doing, keyword filtering? That was effective for my own comment and contact forms. Only had to add about a dozen keywords to stop 99% of the spam. I am wary of relying on third party screening, but obvioulsy access to a large keyword database would be a useful tool. Forum spamming is much easier to stop than blog comment or contact form spamming. I recently added a restriction to a couple of forums to disallow URLs in posts from users with less than five posts (actually it allows them, but sends them to a moderation queue). It has completely eliminated spam posts. That isn't a config option for this forum, but it sounds like we may want to use the Akismet solution. I wonder how it would react to the posts containing code. For a typical blog or contact form you would probably want to block all code... mjp DiscountASP.NET http://DiscountASP.NET
