  1. I offer trial download files to my site visitors. When I try to download a file using FTP I get a user login/password screen. How do I allow anyone to ftp download my files? I know I can do it with HTTP, but under heavy usage, FTP is more stable. I have setup a folder called FTP and placed all the files there. Do I need to set permissions on that folder or what?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  2. Thank you for the quick reply! I read that article. Maybe it's because I'm on the windows 2008 server, but I do not see an option to allow FTP access. I'm stuck. After reading all the KB's, searching forums, I do not see how to do this. Could you be more specific on the exact procedure steps. Thank you very much.

This works a little differently on Win2k8

    • Log onto the control panel and navigate to the User Manager
    • Create a new user by entering the required information in the blank fields under "Active Users" (the blank fields will only be visible if you have less than 3 additional users)
    • Navigate to the Permission Manager
    • Assign Read permissions for the User in the /ftp folder
    • With Win2k8, you can't disable anonymous access via the permission manager. To avoid users from downloading with HTTP, see http://kb.discountasp.net/article.aspx?id=10572
    • Now fire up your FTP client
      • Login: [CustomerID]|[the FTP user]
      • Remote directory: /FTP

  4. I'll look into this for you, I've only allowed users to FTP on the 2003 sites I had here.

  5. I have this link posted all over the internet on software download sites:

    ftp://ftp.mrtec.com/ffbmpro.exe

I have been offering free downloads of my software on the internet for over 14 years. This is my PRIMARY download link. Are you saying that there is NO WAY for me to make these links work anymore (they are all now currently broken since my domain transfered to your servers this week) on your server without a password? My customers are clicking on these links in their web browsers, not ftp clients. They don't know the password. I want them to download the file and am happy to pay for the bandwidth. There must be a solution??? This is a major problem for me and I am losing business.

OK.. what you are looking for is anonymous FTP which we don't support. WHY?

    1) HTTP download is far more common now. You don't get much w/ using FTP for downloading

    2) Anonymous FTP can have potential security issue; especially if we allow anonymous upload.
