Alternatives to Frontpage

Discussion in 'FrontPage' started by Crack, Jan 25, 2004.

  1. I am fairly new to web design and web admin duties, (about 6 months) but I have had nothing but problems with Frontpage and its extensions. The creation of the site was a breeze with FP. I have used Dreamweaver for site creation and I think FP is a much more user friendly program. But the consistent problems are a real pain for me and my customers. Can anyone suggest altenatives to Frontpage for site creation and for a means to publish the site?

IMHO, Dreamweaver by far better than FrontPage.

The learning curve is steeper than FrontPage but it'll work for HTML, ASP, ASP.net, ColdFusion, etc. Once you get a hang of it, it will last you a long time.

Well at twice the price, it had better have some features that Front Page doesn't have. If the extensions are what causes trouble - then why don't you turn em off and upload the sites with FTP, the way you have to with Macromedia.

IMHO Dreamweaver is clunky, hard to manage, and generally more of a pain in the butt than FP. But I admit that any time I want to do something more than an HTML/Javascript page, I use .NET.

I am a fairly old hand at web design/admin duties. I've used Frontpage in all its incarnations and several of Dreamweaver.

Frontpage is good for simple, no-brain type stuff. When you try to get fancy, Frontpage generally explodes. Personally, I see it as little more than a tool to help corporate HR-types keep intranet files up to date.

Dreamweaver is much closer to an IDE. It has a ton of functionality and it.. WORKS. And from ground zero, its learning curve isn't that bad. Lots of tutorials out there and generally things go bad in the same mystifying way that they seem to with Frontpage.

MS should discontinue FrontPage. It's garbage!!!!

Tell you guys couple of horror story.

    1) When you instantiate FP extension on a site, it add 2 groups (Network & Interactive) to have read permission. Network group is everyone that have right to access the server from the network. Interactive Group is everyone that has log on locally right. Basically, in order for your site to work, the anonymous user need to have these right. And stupid frontpage allow read access for these groups. Guess what this means, security problem.

    My advice, don't enable frontpage.

2)FP on iis6 has this new "feature". It turns off permission inheritence on all objects in the whole site. Man... Permission inheritence is a big feature w/ NTFS. What the hell are they thinking???

ASP.net team... if you are listening, please do not use FP for Web app upload.

  7. Bruce, I am about to upload a new site and am now wondering what would be the best way TO do it, without security problems afterwards...I dont really understand the full meaning of your last post..

I use fp2003, have many forms, and it is a subscription site, so I do not want anyone being able to access individual pages prior to logging on..

your input would be appreciated, you seem very involved with these boards and knowledgeable..

try disable anonymous access in the permission manager on the directory.
