Copying VS Project to the server

hello,

I am new to the ASP.net, I have created a project on my local machiene. I have tried copying it to an intranet server from VS. I copied it manually(by hand) to the server. We have .net on the server and .net won't open theproject and on the server willnot create a new project. Do we have to have VS .net on the server? I am going to modify the project on the server, it that possiable?
