  1. I feel like I'm flogging a dead horse, but I fell compelled to bring this up again (I've scanned that last 100 or so posts and I see how often this comes up).

I have several accounts with MS SQL databases which are updated online... so they represent the only copy of their information.

I access the internet via a two way satellite link. Bandwidth is good, but the 27,000 mile hops gives me ping times in the order of 1+ seconds, so using any kind of smart tool like DTS on a database with 80+ tables is is worse than watching grass grow[IMG] It's painfull with just a few MB of data.

So I need some server-based, or single-file-transfer type backup system.

DASP has really improved their SQL backup strategy a bunch from when they started.
Keeping 7 days of backups (even with a fee) is good... but I really need more.

A while back there was talk of making .BAK files available inuser space.

Ideally if the daily backups were also put in my user space, I could download them for my own archives, or leave weekly or monthly ones on the server and just take the hit on the disk usage.

Then, if I ever needed to go back to an OLD one, I could request that Tech Support restore from a specified file on my server. DASP collects the fee, I get piece of mind... we're all happy.

Any reason why this strategy wouldn't work?
It could even be an add-on for sites with critical data requirements.[IMG]

For closure... maybe if/when you get a response, you could post it here.

    Thanks

  4. The reason I am stilling thinking about should I switch to discountasp is the backup and restore issues. My current ISP alway provide the .bak backupat my requested.

I hope we will hear some good news from your team very soon.

    Cartier,

To keep you updated, our developement team is working on a mechanism to ease the restore and backup forDASP customers....There are talks of placing the bakup file in the customers directory, creating an interfacewhere the customercan log into the control panel and see there backup and then restore the database...Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated... as placing the bak file in the webspace will be the fastest to implement...

  6. Though, this is currently in the "talking" stage. Development on this project has yet to be scheduled.

  7. I too am concerned about backups. I do the DTS thing, but I fear the day when (or if) I would have to restore from a DTS backup. I am concerned about the integrity of the data regarding identity columns used as surrogate keys.

I saw a reference from Eric about DASP keeping 7 days of backups. I'm not aware of this, I must have missed something when I signed on. He also mentioned a fee - is this just for restoring? Is there a KB article that will outline the current backup strategy that is employed?

  8. Yes, we keep 7 days of backups for sql database's. We charge a one time fee of $15 to restore the data. The charge is due because of restoration requiring a DBA (manual process).

I wasn't aware our backup strategy wasn't more available. I'll bring this up in our meetings to see if we can make this more information more visible.
