  1. I recently upgraded my DSL to blazing fast 5.0 Mbit downstream. It works great transferring files from other servers (in real-world tests I get about 4.8 mbit). However, when I transfer files from my DiscountASP hosting account, either by FTP or HTTP, I tend to clock out at no more than about 1.73 mbit per second. I know my internet connection can do much better than that, so the issue must be with the DASP servers. Are your web servers throttled at a particular download rate? If so what is it? I get the full upload benefit of my dsl (about 700 kbit/s) but fall far short of my max download bandwidth. If your servers should be able to handle more than 1.73 down, what would your suggestions be to improve matters? TIA!

  2. Thanks for your help! The following is the results of the traceroute:

  3. We do not throttle the up or down stream on our network or our servers. The route for your connection from your home computer to our server might have to go through some slow network peers. That would make downloads slower from our servers then from some others.

We can do a little test to see if there are any slow hops.

On your computer open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> Type 'cmd.exe' -> Hit Enter)
In the command prompt type 'tracert.exe www.discountasp.net'.
This will show the latencey between your computer and all the hops between the discountasp servers.

If you copy and paste the tracert output we can take help diagnose it too.

  4. Any suggestions, interpretations, etc based on that info? Anything else I can provide to help?

  5. Thanks for the reply! Yep, I did the traceroute just minutes before I did the download test that gave me a result of 1.72 mbps. I just did another FTP-transfer test and got the following:

the traceroute looks fine to me.

did you do this during the time of slowness?

  7. Any ideas here? I'm just curious and would like to do better with my download speeds from DASP accounts. Can someone else perform an FTP transfer test from the DASP servers and post some quantative results? What speeds do others max out at (and what is the max speed of your internet connection)?

1.69 Mbps is actually a very good speed!

Keep in mind that download speed depends on a lot of things. I can tell you that i barely get 1Mbps downloading from my home from other download sites.

  9. Thanks Bruce! Actually, I just did another FTP test moments ago and got:
