Domain Pointer Confusion

Discussion in 'General troubleshooting' started by bbirtle, Jun 13, 2009.

  1. Hello,
I've just recently signed up for a hosting account as mycompany.com. But actually, what I'd like is for all these addresses:

    http://myapp.clientx.com/
    http://myapp.clienty.com/
    http://myapp.clientz.com/

to point to the web application I just uploaded to my new mycompany.com hosting package. www.mycompany.com along with name servers and DNS will stay hosted elsewhere. clientx.com and clienty.com will likewise keep their own hosting packages and I will simply add an A record to point to your servers for the above addresses specifically... or so goes the idea.

So I purchased the first "root domain pointer" for clientx.com and added the DNS record. But when I go there, I get this message from your servers:

    Web Page Unavailable
We're sorry, the web page you are trying to reach is unavailable.

    Please contact the website administrator.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

If I go to the temporary address you gave me during sign up, all works fine. (actually, I get an ASP.NET error, but that's because I am still in the process of setting the thing up... I'm assuming since the error messages are different that they are unrelated issues...)

Could you please shed some light on what's going on and how to fix it up?

Looking forward to getting the application up for clientx so I can try to sell it to clients y and z and actually make some money out of all this programming time spent...

    Thanks much!

  2. I believe I am having the same problem

I believe I am having the same problem.

I have had an account here for quite some time and the original site works well.

I have just added a root domain pointer to my account and when I try to access my site using the new pointer, I get the same message as bbirtle:
    Web Page Unavailable
We're sorry, the web page you are trying to reach is unavailable.
    Please contact the website administrator.
    We apologize for the inconvenience.

I can use www.myoriginaldomain.com to get to my site, but I cannot use www.mynewpointer.com.

Am I doing something wrong?

i can't really help w/o checking the server. i recommend creating a support ticket.
