if you do not have SQL installed, there's really no point of having a backup because its rather useless.

Keep in mind that your database file is backup nightly.

I suggest you get a copy of MS SQL 2000 Developer Edition (rather cheap) and install it on your computer. This will allow you to get all the SQL tools and a chance to learn about SQL.

  2. Sorry - didn't realise it was backed up nightly! One question though; if we need to revert to a previous version then, how do we do that?

Will investigate to see how cheap developer edition is...

  3. We've got a live DB running fine on DiscountASP but it was converted from Access via a conversion tool and uploaded. We can't currently afford SQL Server locally.

I see references to DTS but assume this is part of the overall MS installation which we don't have. My worry is: does this mean we are unable to backup the DB to our local machine?

Remember, we really don't know anything technically about MS SQL,other than the fact that it's working fine and we'd like some way of being able to back it up from the live server (and restore if there is a problem). Any links or guidance greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We keep 7 days of SQL data backup. We charge $15 for DB restoration, just submit a ticket to support if you need a restore done.

  5. Actually I think that paying $15 for a restore is useless to anyone not running SQL server locally. What support does for the $15 is create a .BAK file abd copy it to one of your DASP directories.

You then have to ftp the .BAK file to your local machine, restore it locally, then export the restored database or portions thereof to DASP. So you need SQL server installed locally to make use of the .BAK file you paid for.

    Bummer!

  6. By the Developere edition I thing I paid $34. I also have the MSDE version installed and I use the Enterprise Manager that comes with the Dev Edition to manage my MSDE database. Or you can just use the MSDE version, I found some free tools also that worked well. Spend the $34.
