  1. I am trying to install DotNetNuke 5.02 locally while using the database hosted online. I already have a site hosted on discountasp.net but I want to set up and configure the new site before I switch them out.

I purchased a brand new SQL 2008 database to install DotNetNuke. I run the site on localhost and the install fails during the database scripts installation. I get this error:

    Code:
    Installing Database - Version 05.00.00...FAILURE 400 - Generic failure
I am the database owner and I am running it as owner. The installation creates tons of tables, stored procs, views, etc. so it looks like it is mostly successful. I can find information on other failures that are more descriptive but nothing on "Generic" failure.

Before each try, I restore the database to it's original thanks to this post.

Has anybody else experienced this? Do I need to install the site and database online for it to work at all? Is 5.02 not compatible with SQL 2008? It doesn't seem to be a permissions related thing.

After a nine attempts, I'm stumped. Help and thanks!

You would have to get some insight into the error from DNN. The db creation script may be trying to do something we don't allow. But I know that DNN 5.x has been installed successfully. We have tested it ourselves. But it may not have been 5.02.

  3. Success!

After several more tries with a locally hosted site and a remotely hosted (discountasp.net hosted) database, I decided to just upload the DNN community edition to a sub-directory and try the install. It worked wonderfully and am now progressing with installation. When things are good and cozy, I'll just download and back-up the old site, download the new site and then upload it again to the root.

So for the record, 5.02 works just fine. Thanks for the help mjp.

As for doing it the way I was, I never figured out what the problem was.

Sometimes it's best not to know. ;) As long as it's working now, right?
