Hi I searched this board and didn't find anything helpful about this- if it exists and I have missed it, sorry. I tried to use the sample code here: http://support.discountasp.net/KB/a124/websupergoo-abcpdfnet-sample-code.aspx and received the following error: "Could not load file or assembly 'ABCpdf, Version=5.0.0.6, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=a7a0b3f5184f2169' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." (essentially the same results for versions 3 & 4) Except for changing the version number to test different versions, I did not change anything. OK, now, the info file (http://support.discountasp.net/KB/a123/websupergoo-abcpdfnet-information.aspx) says that "WebSupergoo ABCpdf.NET is installed in the Global Assembly Cache on all DiscountASP.NET webservers." so shouldn't the sample code be able to run as is on my on my site? Any thoughts on what I'm missing? Thanks a lot Stephen
That error means you have to upload the ABCPDF to your BIN directory. Regardless of whether it's in the GAC or not, you still have to upload your own copy. I also see it's in the "unsupported" list for IIS7 servers: http://support.discountasp.net/KB/a395/list-of-supported-and-deprecated-components-in-iis-7.aspx
Hi Ramses Thanks very much for the heads up on the bin directory, I didn't know that and will give it a try. Re: the "unsupported" list, I DID see that but, ever the optimist, I went with the hopeful stance: "WebSupergoo ABCpdf.NET is installed in the Global Assembly Cache on all DiscountASP.NET webservers." I'll let you know how it goes, and thanks! Stephen
Unfortunately, some partners we work with change their business model and decide to not work so closely with webhosts as is the case with websupergoo. The component partnerships will never be a stable, forever, every update, every server OS, type of thing - just the nature of the business. We try to do the best we can to navigate through these ever changing situations.
Thanks Eric, that makes sense. It's the same in my field (education policies change every few weeks it seems) . I am left with 2 yes/no question though: 1.) Is pursuing ABCPDF solution a waste of time? (I still don't know if it is on the 2008 servers, where to get whatever version of what needs to go in the bin, etc.). 2.) Are there any other recommended solutions for creating a pdf on-the-fly? Thanks Stephen
Good thing about .NET component is that you can pretty much use any components without us installing it on the server. You just simply upload the components to the bin directory. I have not tested other pdf component but you should be able to find many on Google / Bing.
Oh man, would anyone in the world have founded that last answer helpful? I have searched "pdf" here and sifted through many postings without finding what I need. Maybe it's right there in front of me and I am missing it and am an idiot, but even so why on earth would someone take the time to add something so flip and unhelpful, rather than just providing a link? 1) On their website, DiscountASP says they have the abcpdf component installed on all servers. 2) On their website, DiscountASP offers sample code on using that very same component. 3) The code did not work as is on my DiscountASP account 4) I asked for help making it work. 5) The answers discuss business models, looking for other solutions, why it isn't really necessary, and to search "pdf" for the hundredth time.
Well, that was more of an addendum to bruce saying to search Google than a suggestion for you. People other than us will read this, so I don't make any assumptions. "Unsupported" for IIS 7 means it is not on the Windows 2008 servers. Thanks for pointing out that ambiguity in the Knowledge Base, it's fixed now. As for "Is pursuing ABCPDF solution a waste of time?" we can't answer that, because it's not something we have tested on the IIS 7 servers. The other suggestions I see when I search ABCPDF in the forum here aren't conclusive, and I don't see anyone returning to post that they have found a work-around or a better solution. We don't know what you need to do with PDF, so there isn't much to offer I'm afraid.
