FrontPage or Not FrontPage, that is the Question...

Discussion in 'FrontPage' started by JeffP, May 12, 2006.

  1. Facts, nothing has been uploaded or installed into my site(s)...

    1. Will installing FP Ext will enable me to develop/edit my classic ASP site in VS ?

    2. If I do not install FP Ext, can I "copy" my classic ASP site via FTP and expect that it will work as it does on my local machine, where FP Ext are installed?

    3. If I do not install FP Ext, can I "copy" my ASP.Net (1.1x) project via FTP and expect that it will work as it does on my local machine, where FP Ext are installed?

    4. Since I've not installed or added any folders is this a good time to install FP Ext from the Control Panel?

4b. And considering the above questions,if anyone hasany warnings or gotcha's, please post.

    * Which version of VS are you referring to? Visual InterDev?

Yes. ASP does NOT rely on FrontPage to work

My suggestion, DO NOT use FrontPage unless you are a complete newbie (which doesn't seems like that to me). FrontPage cause more problem than it helps.

  3. Bruce,

Yes, I no longer use InterDev, but I still use VS 2003, however when I want to connect to edit a web I use FP Ext, I'm not sure why perhaps it's because I have FP installed in the web that I need to maintain that type of connection.

Yes, I'm not a FAN of FP. Even in my early days I was never a happy with FP formatting my html to an almost unreadable degree.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  4. I use Front Page for all my sites .. and im not a newbie .. been doing asp since it started ... i tried the other stuff it just wasnt as simple .. i write the hardcore code .. all i need to do is upload it quick and easy ..

Anyway, its a simple way to upload sites and edit them .. in classic ASP or not .. I highly recommend it ..
For example, if you dont want to waste time writing HTML for a bunch of tables, simply create a new page and create it visually ... copy the HTML for that into your ASP page .. do some simple replaces on the colons to double colons .. and thats it .. also. especially useful when using colors ... basically it saves a ton of time.

FP always will have its issues such as div and table border tags (but if your stuck on the w3.org validating then you have more on your hands then FP) .. but ultimately i use it for all my classic ASP work .. occasionally i have a file i need to open in Text only .. but its still all done in FP ..

BTW FP formatting of tags has come along way from the earlier versions, it doesnt reformat any of my code, even when i put a <!--thisisme--> inside an image or href tag ... though i typically use [#thisisme#] tags anyway .. Older versions of FP had issues but FP 2002 has worked for me since way back when ..

oh yeah .. and its basically free .. (once you have MS office)

  5. so i heard .. /emoticons/smile.gif I do agree it has some uploading issues on and off ..

But man typically i can update certain sections of code soo quick with it ..
change a bit of code in a 3000 line script and then click publish .. done /emoticons/smile.gif

FrontPage client is not a bad tool for site design. The big problem is the Server Extension, it does many weird things on the server!!
