Am new to this hosting server, but website has been active and should be accessible, yet I have set up ftp access in Coreftp & FileZilla and used all their docs on what to place in to the site manager info, nothing has worked and each time as well as for each ftp user that has been set up and created and active, the site rootremains inaccessible.

Is there a specific ftp client to use or do they just prefer you to us IIS 7.0 for all? Like to use many ways. Any insight is appreciated. Used to ICE Storm and other hosting servers cpanels, this one here is a little less than....

I had recently asked them where I would set up our directory structure and password protected directories and they said that was outside the scope of their support, yet in their cpanel area ( Which is limited and not very UI) they have given no area to do this. I am beginning to realize they prefer IIS 7 to be used for all site developement and management. Which is fine, but I do see a lot of issues with this as well.

Any one else come accross not being able to set up straight ftp access using client side software?

    Thanks

  2. Personally I prefer Visual Studio 2008 for IIS7.
Today I tested something on the test IIS7 server and it worked very well.
Free, the new addon for Firefox 3, FireFTP: http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

Give it a spin, I thought it was pretty slick.

Thanks, will do! Much appreciated and am very impressed with your services. Your hosting company is one of the best that I found in all my research that would handle what we have designs for.:) So far so good!

    Take care

PS to rcp reply: Setting up members/ roles. I have added the deny which is perfect. I am in IIS 7.0 and when I try to access .net roles it says it is disabled, and I am getting sql error as well in the users section, which I am just testing everything...But I can't seem to add users for a windows log in don't want to use forms unless have to, but that is what it is forcing me, yet I am denyed to enable forms for that directory for some reason.

Any additional set-up tips would help!:)

  5. PLB,

What is the error that you are getting? Did you run the aspnet_regsql.exe against your SQL addon hosted on our SQL server?

It seems the only items in the security settings group of IIS 7 that I can access from here are the Authentication Settings themselves, EXCEPT it won't let me enable FORMS, and I can set Allow Denys, but everything else says it is in read only or disabled. Then if I select users, it says the local sql server not found....error from line 148 in config file. Perhaps I have missed a step? I would like to be able to set up just users for a basic authentication so they can at least access the directory. But no matter what I do, I can't seem to access to create users, roles, groups, etc.

    Thanks

  7. PLB,

Thanks for bringing up the point about our FTP section in our KB article list. The FTP instructions was created with in mind for only Windows 2003/IIS 6. With Windows 2008/IIS 7 the naming convention is different. The naming convention is different in Windows 2008 it is [customer id]|[login name]. This tells IIS 7 exactly what the root directory name to go to so you do not need to specify the root directory name unlike IIS 6.

If you want to secure pages on a website, you may want to consider just setting up a .Net membership/roles provider, instead of setting up NTFS permission settings to password protect a directory. True it's a little more complicated but it does allow you to have more then 3 logins, and any web application under the membership/roles provider can essentially be protected from direct access without a proper login and password.

I got it...their documentation was incorrect for FileZilla, Zilla don't need or apparently one doesn't need to list the default remote directory on the advanced tab for #8 of their steps. I let them know they should omit.Good thing I did or me team mate would have had a hell of time tonight trying....

But hey I'm always looking for new things to try and use for better reliablity. Thanks much I'll give it a shot.

I have IIS 7 and not super big fan, but it handles well enough.I like Firefox. And I certainly prefer V08 to V05:) Thanks

PS:I was looking in the cpanel, so I can passward protect and create users for a specific directory, but they have me going into IIS7 for that. At least all their documentation points to that, would like to do it a faster easier way...hmmm. But then it says I'm only allowed to create 3 users, that I'm assuming is in relation to FTP users not user accessing from browser a specific directory type user. That is not the same...Oh well...
