FTP Errors and Timeouts

It seems the FTP access to my site is incredibly shotty. I'm using Filezilla ftp client to connect to my site. I have changed the options to only use one connection when uploading or downloading files from my site. I have also changed the Transfer Mode to Active.

I am consistently getting unable to connect errors and timeouts when connecting to my site via FTP. I will get an unable to connect message, and it will defer reconnection for about 5 seconds. After the second failed attempt it finally connects.

When I'm trying to upload files, it constantly is disconnecting mid upload and having to wait and reconnect, which it then fails a few times and then finally reconnects.

Now I am having problems uploading a single file to my site as it looks like its timing out while changing directories.

This is extremely frustrating having to go back and reupload all the failed transfers I get from the disconnections and having to wait to get on to my site. It should work the first time, I shouldn't have to go through all these disconnects and timeouts just to access the files on my site.

Could you please advise how I could fix this problem?
