  1. At webhost4life I can have one account and host 8 unique domain names.

Asking how to do this at DiscountASP I am told to purchase 8 accounts
The price differance is $120 to over $700 per year - I SEE NO DISCOUNT ON THIS HOST.

What WH4L will do - is let you set up a sub folder - one for each domain
Then on the control panel match the domain name to the folder
Set up the DNS and your web site runs out of a sub folder
NO CODEING ON REMAPPING NO OTHER LOOK WHAT YOU GOT UP YOUR SLEVE

So how do you do this at DISCOUNT ASP?

Oh and the support people would not tell me how to do it but told me to come to this site and ask...
    It that support or what?

    Thanks,

    NHJim

  2. DiscountASP.NET: Single domain per account with well-balanced provisioning of those accounts = good performance for all accounts

WebHost4Life: Unlimited domains per account with no real balancing going on at all = crappy performance for those running on the same server as some bozo that tries to run 100 domains ona single $10/month account...

I've used both and much prefer how they do things here.

I do agree with you on one thing: They need to change the name. I've had two clients who've told me "we don't want to use a discount provider, we want a real one". For some folks, discount=junk and that's definately NOT what they're selling here.

  3. Jamie,

    Thank you.

What I am looking for is the method to be allow to host a few accounts with domain names out of sub folders.

One account is for the Boy Scouts - they get 10 to 20 hits per day.
A second is for a Rotary Club - they have a fund raiser and for the month of June will get 3-4000 hits and then 10 per month.

So I was hoping to find a place to host this type account under an account that is commerical on this site.

When I ask tech supportthey - they told me it could be done - but they would not help me do it - or tell me how to do it they told me to come to this area and post a message and someone would tell me how to get the hositing out of sub folder set up and working...

Strange way to do business but?

Thanks. The name is something that we have discussed. When we started our prices were low, and the "discount" moniker was appropriate. As service improves and many of our competitors offer lower prices, we may not seem to fit the discount tag as much these days.

But changing the name after five years would be problematic. We have built a solid reputation as DiscountASP.NET, and changing the name would blow much of that brand identification out the window (or give people the impression that the company had been sold). There are a lot of ways to handle that, but I don't think it's something that we're going to do any time soon.

As for webhost4life, we know what goes on behind the scenes there. I don't want to say too much, but suffice it to say that you are in better hands here. As Jamie pointed out, those all-you-can-eat accounts might look good from a distance, but once you're at the table you might not like what you see.

  5. OK - WE ARE THE BEST - WE ARE GREAT - NO ONE IS BETTER THAN US

LOOKING FOR THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION...

NOT WE ARE THE BEST - THEY SUCK

However a sidequestion (AGAIN NOT THE MAIN TOPIC OF THIS THERAD)is why would the tech support people tell me to come to this forum to get the answer on how to accomplish something on there server???

All hosts are different and they focus on different things. My question is, if a host is offering 8 sites under one account are they hosting 8 timesless sites than we host? And they try to having a lower price point than us to boot? Chances are they are hosting moreaccounts than we do on one server to make money so they can stay in business. And each of thoseaccounts canhave multiple sites. So imagine what happens to theserver as each account matures over time and keeps adding more and moresites on the box. It's a recipe for disaster. That is why we see a lot of customers moving their sites over to us from these "multidomain" hosts.

As for the brand name - we have considered rebranding but it is way to costly to execute at this time.

    Thanks,

I look and read about 10 of these.
Most seem to be a redirect 301.

My issue is from my Discount ASP.net root folder to have sub folders for A FEW LOW VOLUME Not for Profitweb sites
One web site is for a boy scout troop 10 to 12 hits PER WEEK
Another is for a Rotary Fund Raiser web site - 20 hits per month and 10,000 hits in June

So I would place abc.com in sub folder abc
And place xyz.com in sub folder xyz

What I read was that I would place a redirect web application in the root folder
And point abc.com and xyz.com to the Discount ASP.net DNS(running from the root folder)
The redirect them to a specific start page

So I would resolve the sending request as abc.com and send it to root\abc\abcdefault.aspx
And do the same for a request to xyz.com to point at root\xyz\zyzdefault.aspx

    Is this correct???

    Thanks,

    Jim

Because we don't provide help with coding issues, for many good reasons (good for you and good for us). As for support sending you here, you asked a common question and all the answers are here. So we point you to the forum as a resource.

  11. There is no reason to believe that just because a host offers multiple sites under one account that the don't limit the number of *sites* on a server. It's not a technical issue, it's a billing issue. I also would like to have multiple domains under one account. One control panel login, one FTP username/password, it's just more convenient. It's not a deal breaker, but it would be nice. I'll put potential deal breakers in another thread.

  12. In the past I ran multiple large communities here under one account.
    One had the root domain.
    Others were root pointer domains.
I used code to sniff the incoming domain name for each community.
Neither of the communities had anything to do with each other.
Neither knew about the other but they would notice the redirect in the URL if they tried to backup to the root.

    Example, root domain: TheSite

Folders in DASP account: siteroot/thisone siteroot/thatone

Incoming domain hits: thisone...automatically directed to TheSite/thisone, thatone directed to TheSite/thatone

Worked like a charm, even for user forums andDASP does a great job on the site Applications feature in the CP.

I'm with DASP because I have tested the others, thosethat arecheaper and much more expensive.
We may not have the best of everything here but I'm positive we have the very best single shared hosting available.

  13. Hmmm, interesting. I suppose I could use URL re-writing to accomplish a similar thing. Maybe I'll give it a go.

  15. Check the HTTP Host header in an ASP.NET IHttpModule or Global.asax and route the request accordingly.
