  1. Hey All -

I'm looking for a new host so what's your opionion of Discount ASP.Net? I've been looking at the forums and I'm a little concerned about the "Service Unavailable" errors that are posted in several posts. That's one of the reasons I'm leaving my current host that I've been with for over 5 years.

    - How would you rate the support on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 scoring best).
    - What's the longest amount of downtime you've encountered?
    - I noticed that some mail servers here have hit the spam blacklists. How quickly are these issues resolved?
    - Is the email support truly 24/7 as advertised?
    - If you've ever encountered a situation where your web server was down did you feel that these guys were responsive or did you feel hung out to dry?
    - How would you rate the bandwidth?
    - Do you often see latency issues?

    Thanks for your help.

  2. Hey Vic - good to see somebody taking a "smart" approach instead of reading responses only.

Now i haven't been using DASP for long - but what i have seen so far have impressed me. And i've been using services both in australia, europe and the US. Hell, my job includes taking care of the Windows hosting environment for the Telco i work for.

    - support:
    ---- can't say much, haven't needed them

    - downtime
----Cant say much about downtime..haven't had any.

    - bandwidth
    ---- seems fine to me

    - latency
---- nothing to complain about here. fast, responsive and consistent.

If you look at some of the "service unavailable" posts, and really read into them, then there isn't that many. I mean, as a web host, with (likely) 1000s of clients, you can expect a few hickups here and there. Seriously, i have NEVER seen/used a web host that hasn't had recorded downtime/services offline. Now if you had 1000 complaints in here i would be running for the hills. but no, there's VERY few of them.

Anyways, i wish you the best of luck in choosing your host.

  3. Brian -

Hey thanks for the feedback. Customer feedback or lack of speaks volumes... I'm in agreement with you that there aren't that many "Server Unavailable" messages and do understand that those issues can occur. It's how they're handled which makes the difference for paying customers.

I did have one other question. Does anyone know if DASP forces SMTP Authorization on the Mail Servers?

    Thanks again!

Yes. If you are connecting from a external network, we require you to check mail before we allow you to send (POP before SMTP authentication)

  5. Definitely agree Vic - though they seem to be onto things pretty quickly.

  7. Very happy with DASP... I now have 4 sites with them, one of which is a pretty complex and demanding SQL database asp.net site. In fact, did the big server move/upgrade that you've been warning us about for weeks really happen last night? I didn't even notice...

    yes. it did happen.

the time estimate we gave was very conservative and the actual downtime was much smaller.

  10. I have had a very bad experience with dasp. My site went down without notice. I investigated from my end and found nothing wrong. I send email to support and some time later was told, I was shut down for spamming! I was shock and had to plead and beg to get my site back up and running. They wouldn't listen to me, I had no idea why they thought I was spamming. I told them it wasn't me, they suggested I save my data because I was going to be shut down. They told me my email server must be compromised! I had to call the web site that did the real spamming and had letters and wanted to set up conference call so the offender would tell them I had nothing to do with them. Meantime while my site was down the offender's site (a dasp client) was up and running!!! 3 or 4 days later they turned me back on with a stern warning, if it happens again we shut you down! I had nothing to do with this spamming and dasp was not helpful at all. As I was playing around with the aspnetmail I found by mistake that you can send email WITHOUT a user ID or password, this is not in my control. So if you want to use the service that doesn?t contact you and just shut you down because of things outside your control, this is a great place!! Instead of them trying to help I had to prove over and over it wasn't me! I'm sure I will get beat up in this forum for saying this.</o:p>

our abuse department can be sometimes too aggressive. we have very strict policy to email abuse which earn us a very good relationship with many real time black list. with strict abuse policy, we were able to make sure our email server do not get blocked.

    i'll reflect this to management.

  12. I have no problem with stopping spam as soon as posible. Why not just shut down the mail server part and notify the customer. Why not listen to a customer after 3 or 10 emails and help investagate why your client's email server was comprimised. There was no help, no phone number to plea my case. Why should I have had prove to them I'm not the offender. What else is being comprimised on thier servers? Shouldn't they (dasp) have the expertise to have help me out? The email in question was from another web site they didn't even contact (still their client). They (web site who did spamming) are the ones who used my mail server to spam people! I'm not talking about shutting down a site for spamming, I'm talking about the service after that to an innocent client. In my opinion mail servers on DASP are still unsecure. I'll stop now thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

    Thanks
    Tony
