  1. Hi all,

I'm new on discountAsp and for my site I'm using MS Access databases.
    Some simple questions :

1/ how to backup the database ?
If I do a simple FTP copy I'm not sure the db is in use.. so data can be inconsistent no ?

2/ is there a way to be sure the db is shutdown ?

3/ is there a way to update the db from outside ?
I mean from my office can I access the database on the site ?
If not, how to update informations in the db ? must I do local copy then
recopy the modified db on the site ? (so questions 1 and 2 are important)

I thank you all in advance for your answer.

  2. Hi,

A nice tool for administration is dbadmin from http://www.stpworks.com. You almost have complete access to your database : data and design of tables, queries, ... You can also make backups from your access database.

    Success

  3. thanks for the link. It seems to be an interesting tool.
    did you try it ?

  4. yes, I used it for almost 2 years and was very happy about it. Now my access databases are to big (> 45Mb), so I'm 'upgrading' to SQL server.

  5. Thanks again.
I tried the tool, and it makes the job.

I'm using Access cause this is the database offered in the account...
I have no real experience with Access in a web site since I used to develop with 'true' databases (such as SQL Server and some others).

You're saying you're upgrading cause the database is now 45 Mb. What are the main problems ?

thanks in advance for your advise.

  7. Ok. it's a performance problem. Then you're certainly right, moving to SQL server will speed up thinks.
But if your application is sending lot of queries you'll perhaps have to rewrite some of thems or change the logic of your program to be more efficient.
If you need some advices feel free to ask, I'll try to help. I'm not to bad in database design and SQL.
