  1. I just transferred to discountasp.net from another hosting provider. I am having trouble grasping some of the policies here. At my old provider I had one account but handled two domains completely seperately I just created two web applications and they pointed the appropriate domain name at the appropriate application. And e-mail was covered for both domains.

From what I understand here they want me to pay $15 for root domain pointer which then I have to redirect to the appropriate application myself. Won't this end up with the user seing an ugly url? I guess I could handle 404 errors and then server side redirect to the right page but wouldn't that muck up my logs and make it hard to find actual 404 errors?

I also understand that I will need to go somewhere else and get them to set up something for the e-mail for the other domain.

Maybe I am missing something but I don't understand all this. Is there a reason for this other than trying to force me to buy two seperate accounts even though both websites combined fit well within the hard drive space/ traffic limits / email account limits of one account?

I am starting to think I may need to move to another provider yet again to meet my needs. Can someone tell me this isn't true?

    Thanks,

    Bradley

We do not offer the "mutidomain" hosting as you describe at the other hosting provider as it is less secure and less reliable. We host each site in its own isolated application pool for increased security and reliability. If you need a separate domain with separate website and email service, the best thing to do is sign up a second account. You can do so using the online order form at https://www.discountasp.net/signup

  3. While I appreciate your concerns for security and reliability, I really wish you would let me make those decisions. For example, I complete understand that mentality if I am hosting two seperate mission critical applications but in my case we are talking about a blog and a family website. I don't really want to pay double so that if code in my blog malfunctions my family website stays up.

And I am not entirely sure how the application pools factor into this. Aren't those set at the application level in IIS? What does it have to do with seperate domain names?

Manyhosts use shared application pools so they can get higher density of sites on a box for more revenue. So if another customer uploads a bad script then it can take down all the sites in that shared app pool - which includes yours. Thats why we have a lot of customers moving to us because of the poor reliability at other hosts - they don't want to risk their sites being affected by other customers.

By using shared app pools, security becomes an issue so these hosts typically run in medium trust - which doesn't play well with many commercial/shareware/free .NET applications. So that is another reason why people move to us, so that their applications work.

Web Hosting is not a one size fits all type of thing. It's a tradeoff. We've made a business decision to make our offering as secure and reliable as possible. We made a business decision to steamline our offering (and not get into the "multidomain" type of hosting and deal with all the issues related to it) so that we can focus on innovation. We are not the right host for all sites out there.

You'll need to make your decision on your budget, the type of host you want to be with and the tradeoffs you are willing to take for your sites. I mean, there must be a reason why you decided to move from your other host to us...

  5. I totally understand where you are coming from but your description just doesn't make sense to me. I am not asking you to share my app pool with your other customers. I just want two domains that I ownto point to two different applicationsthat belong to the same account. I don't see how that affects the security and reliability of any of your other customers.

I really like some of the services you offer and in my short time with you, your customer support has been excellent (which was the reason I left my previous provider) but it just seems unreasonable to make me pay for two accounts when I will use a miniscule amount of the resources alloted for each account, just to use two different domain names.

Like you said, I'll have to go look at what other providers are out there and make the decision that is best for me. I just wish I could make sense of your reasoning before moving to another provider.

And I have seen other posts on the forum with potential customers that have the same compliant.

From our point of view, supporting a multidomain option is not trivial. We would need to put in a LOT of work in the backend and to build a front end control panel system so customers can manage accounts. Its a BIG investment and it will slow us down in innovating and being agile in adopting new .NET technology-with aLOT more things that can break and all thetesting and QA work for each new product enhancement.

We understand there there is a market for customers with your multidomain needs, but at this time, we are not going to play in that marketplace. As often is the case in hosting, what seems like an easy thing to do for one account, is very complicated when you scale it out and consider all the things that can happen.
