MX Record change not working

  1. Hi,

I had a domain registered and hosted at GoDaddy, with email hosted on my corporate Exchange server. It's the same issue as detailed in this thread:

    http://community.discountasp.net/showthread.php?t=8569

I have made all the required changes, so that the GoDaddy nameservers now point to DASP.

I have disabled Smartermail/DASP email in the control panel.

I have changed the MX record in the DNS manager to point to the exchange server.

But now when I try to send email to the domain, it gets a delivery failure.

I notice that in DNS manager there are still settings regarding Smartermail (eg. a pop3 and smtp entry). Surely when I disabled email these should have been deleted, or must I delete them manually?

    Thanks,
    Richard

  2. Exchange

I forgot to mention that the Exchange server is actually SBS 2008 and not on a fixed IP address.

But the MX record on both DASP and GoDaddy is set to remote.<domain name>

This has always worked for inbound email when hosting at GoDaddy, but is now broken when hosting on DASP.

Any idea why that might be?

    Hi Richard,

The MX record identifies which server is responsible for the mail for a domain. Since you have this set to remote.<domain name>, it needs to resolve to a public IP address. I can't comment on how/why it was working at GoDaddy as I'm not sure of how they have setup things over there. It should not have worked unless there was at least an A record for remote.<domain name> on their name servers.

You can enter an A record for remote.<domain name> in the DNS Manager section of your Control Panel, but since you said that your Exchange Server is not on a fixed IP address, I'm not sure how that will help. It will need to have a public IP address in order for the domain name to resolve.

  4. Hi Tasslehoff,

You hit the nail on the head - it seems that SBS2008 setup an A record for the "remote." address over at GoDaddy, so I've copied that here and it works.

I'm as stumped as you are (ho ho, did you get the pun there? you being a member of the shorter race, see?) as to how it works with SBS being on a dynamic IP.

Perhaps Raistlin knows how such magic works... ;)

    Thanks for your help!
    Richard
