MX Records for Exchange Servers

  1. Team,

I have a domain I registered with register.com. It is active as a domain pointer to a parent account. The register.com domain NS records are pointed to the discountasp name servers. I'd like to point the MX records to an internal corporate exchange server.

I've gone around in circles with support via email. The end thread with them is something like this:

My domain is registered with register.com. I cannot manage my DNS through discountasp.net because I did not register this domain with discountasp.net ... and discountasp.net does not support domain transfers. You recommended I transfer the domain to GoDaddy, but then recommend I point the name servers to discountasp.net. By pointing the NS records to discountasp.net, that gives discountasp.net, the DNS authority ... but since domain manager support is only for domains registered through discountasp.net, there is not support. Something is amiss.

Again, I find it hard to believe, given the vast businesses you support, this has not come up before.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Richard.

If your Domain Name Servers for the domain are pointing to DiscountASP.NET and the domain is set up as a hosting account or root domain pointer at DiscountASP.NET, then you can use our DNS Manager and point your MX Records elsewhere. Did you try it in the control panel DNS Manager?

  3. Okay, so let me follow this as I need to essentially do the same thing:
    1. At Network Solutions, change my name servers to the DiscountASP.net name servers.
    2. DiscountASP picks up the change and suddenly DNS Manager is activated for my account (despite it saying that this service is only for names registered with discountASP????)
    3. Change the MX pointer to point to my company's Exchange server.

I'm concerned about step 2. Can you please confirm this will work.

  4. You can actually always access the DNS Manager but any changes made there will not work unless you have the name servers pointed to us.

If you point the name servers to us, you'll be able to use the DNS Manager to point the MX records to your Exchange servers.

We'd also recommend that you make the DNS changes before changing the name servers, to make sure it has no downtime.
