my web site name

  1. It is a confusing situation. There are instructions- and I have tried them- that I can reach the Welcome to DiscountASP.NET page by typing in my web page name. And it certainly does work. This, of course, leaves the question of what about people who want to visit my site? They are all going to go to Welcome To DiscountASP.NET.
And that is not exactly what this exercise is about.
My invoice to start this site is dated 30 Dec 08. And we really haven't had many days for whatever it is to record my DNS information. Yes, I have told my domain register the three DNS name servers that are written on the Welcome To DiscountASP.NET page.
Am I too impatient or is is there something I should be doing to get my URL to return something besides DiscountASP's Welcome page?

  2. Hi,
DASP provides you with a temp URL that can be used from the beginning and at any time later.
They also create a default page for your site, which you can login and change or delete.
From your Control Panel login you can alter the default pages or their types.
If your Domain name is not resolving yet you need to test with your temp URL.

  3. Thank you for responding.

I used my temp URL http://landuseplan.web151.discountasp.net

and immediately got the Welcome to DiscountASP.NET page which says my site is set up and I can upload my site. Which, obviously, I have already done. At least I think I have.

When I use the Web Application Tool I get a list of my folders under \landuseplan and a current path with \landuseplan written in red. I have a lot of pages in landuseplan which are not in folders, one of which is "default.aspx" the first, rootpage. The Web Application Tool doesn'tdisplay the pages in landuseplan; it only shows folders. And I have read the two knowledge base articles, which don't seem to be addressing my problem. They seem to be preoccupied with web applications in subdirectories. The Web Application Tool is the only place that gets anywhere near showing me what is in landuseplan.

So I do the control panel login and get a page which has news running down the center column, advertising in the right column and a site map on the left column. Which item in that left hand column gets me to where I can alter the default pages or their types?

We are dealing with a very basic question- how does a potential visitor to my site ever reach it when the URL of the site- landuseplan.net and its alternative URL both reach the Welcome to DiscountASP.NET page?

Sorry to be so dumb. Something is missing.

  4. Hi,
There is a huge diferance between an Application and a Site in VS.
You are using Visual Studio, right?
If so, I'd suggest you use the Copy Website tool instead.
With it you can transfer files from local to remote and from remote to local, you can also delete that DASP welcome page.
If you need more help let me know, I have been meaning to create a Webcast for this.

  5. Well now we are making progress.
Who would ever guess DASP added index.htm to my files that I sent over as my site?

But there it is, showing up on the remote web site list in my VWD 2008 express screen. So I deleted it and now my site appears on the web.

The simple answer tothis difficulty is that DASP never lists the files that make my web site. The list is always on my machine, including the Remote Web Site list.

Many thanks. Now I have to see how things work on your server.
