Need FTP Directory help

  1. Hi ~

I need to set up an FTPdirectory for public access. My "regular" ftp works fine and I can update my web pages that way, but I need a separate folder (that doesn't contain all my web stuff) so that I can share files with friends.

I have set up a subdirectory, but can't figure out how to go directly there. I don't want the ftp people to go to my main root directory, for obvious reasons, but they do need to read and write in this new public directory.

Because permissions are inherited, how can I deny read/write for ftp users in the root directory, but give them full permissions in a subdirectory?

Appreciate any suggestions - or link to a setup guide.

Use the Control PanelUser Manager to create a new user and then assign the user permissions using the Permission manager of the control panel.

  3. Thank you for the reply, but I need to clarify.

For regular web maintenance, I use IE and the address: ftp://ftp.brucegmusic.com

    Log on window pops up and I fill in the acct username and pw;

    This displays a window with:
    FTP root at ftp.brucegmusic.com

To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.

I then click on the Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer as indicated.
This results in another login form, where I again put in my account username and password.

This then opens the folder for ftp://ftp.brucegmusic.com/and displays the folder which appears to be the same folder for the website root. From here I can update web site files. I do not want the other people to even be able to see this folder.

I can also see the various subfolders, including the one I called "public", which is where I want the other people to have read/write access. This is perhaps where I am doing an erroneous setup because I am wanting the public users to have only denypermissions to theroot folder, butonthe Public subfolder am wanting the users to be able to upload and download as necessary.

Going back now to the login procedure for my public users:

As a Public user, I want to go straight to: ftp://ftp.brucegmusic.com/public.

Log on window pops up and I fill in the public username I created and use the associated password.

    This fails, with

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Starting over, again as a Public user, I go to: ftp://ftp.brucegmusic.com/

Log on window pops up and I fill in the public username I created and use the associated password.

    displays a window with:
    FTP root at ftp.brucegmusic.com

To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.

I then click on the Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer as indicated.
This results in another login form, where I again put in my account username and password.

The best result I have gotten is a blank page (but no error), with the address indicating I'm in the ftp root. But no subdirectories are visible.

    =========

I have also tried naming a subdirectory the same as my ftp username, have tried various permission combinations, etc... I have never succeded in IE being able to display the subfolder I am wanting.

In lieu of a step-by-step guide, I guess my questions would include
    1) can a user be allowed full access to a subfolder without having full access to the parent folder?
    2) are there any associations between a username and folder names?
    3) are new users completely independant of the Anonymous user?
    4) can an anonymous user be allowed read/write permissions to an ftp Subfolder?

Sorry if this is elemental stuff, and I would be happy to look up and study any reference materials you can suggest.

    Thank you.

Thank you. I?ve got it all working now.

However, I just want to confirm something. In those documents, there are references to ?main account username?, ?main_user?, ?main_username?, and ?account_username?.

My assumption is that they are all referring to the same thing, right?

    Thanks again~
