Newbie VWD deployment questions

I've created a site on my local host using the clubsite tempalte and want to deploy it to the beta server. Just using VWD's copy website via fTP does not seem to work. Can anyone provide a step by step tutorial as to how this should be done? Do the connection strings need to be changed? If so , how about an example? Do I need to mess with DNBS or database settings on the server?I'm using mysql on the server since that's what I was using on my local machine. Are there any other server settings or config settings that need to be changed?
