Odd Messages with Zip Attachments

  1. This may be related to the e-mail server problems that we have seen recently ...

Today, I received an e-mail which had a zipped attachment. The message was addressed to [email protected] (a non-existant address) and with the subject line 'Your email was blocked'. The body of the message read as follows

    -------------
This is an automatically generated E-Mail Delivery Status Notification.

Mail-Header, Mail-Body and Error Description are attached

    *** AntiVirus: No Virus found
    *** 'ARMANDA' Anti-Virus
    *** http://www.armanda.com

I'm now receiving reports of similar messages from numerous mail users at another of the sites that we host at DASP, although the sender's e-mail and the subject line varies.

Is this related to the recent e-mail outages?

Are the rest of you seeing similar mail flow through to your individual or catch-all accounts?

Yes, we are aware of issues with the virus scanner. The virus scanner issue is, in part, related to recent email issues. We are working on resolving this issue.

Please do not open zip files which you are not expecting to receive.

  3. Thankfully, I knew enough to not open the file. I also updated my Norton Anti-Virus definitions again today. Even though my last update was only a few days ago, the e-mail I received was an example of issues that 'slip through the cracks'. The zip file contains a virus called W32.Sober.O@mm. This virus was added to Norton's definitions on Monday, May 2 and then updated yesterday.

According to Symantec, it is a mass-mailing worm that sends itself as an email attachment to addresses gathered from the compromised computer. For more information, go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected].
