Personal Web Site Starter Kit

Discussion in 'ASP.NET Starter Kits' started by sitecreator4u, Jul 20, 2008.

  1. Hi,

I'm using ASP.NET 2.0 Personal Web Site Starter Kit

    and I'm getting this error:

Could not find stored procedure 'GetNonEmptyAlbums'

    Line 209: using (SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader()) {

    Source File: c:\Inetpub\PersonalWebsiteSK\App_Code\PhotoManager.cs Line: 209

    Would appreciate any help.

  2. Hi,
You getting thatrunning the site locally?

  3. Hi,
    Yes that is correct.

I did try uploading the site to discountasp. I made that folder as an application.

But I also got an error but I need to change something which I'm not sure yet to see what the error is.

This is the error which I upload to discountasp (which I know doesn't help at all in finding a solution):

    Server Error in '/misc/PersonalWebsiteSK' Application.
    Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

  4. Can you tell me a bit about how you uploaded the Starterkit, if you placed the files in a sub-folder, etc.?
If you really get stuck I can login for you and take a look at the files too, that's something I do a lot here.
    All the best,
    Mark

  5. Hi Mark,

    Thanks for writing back.

Yes I placed the files in a sub-folder. I then went into the control panel and made this sub-folder an application.

    http://www.websitedesigninnewyork.com/misc/PersonalWebsiteSK/

to be honest I'm not sure about giving out my login info.

If it's at all possible could you let me know how I can get rid of the current error message at the link above.

I think it's fairly simple it's just I'm a newbie. Maybe if I can figure that out another error message will come up that I can let you know about which will get me closer to figuring out the album error that I originally posted.

    Thanks for any help.

  6. Hi,
The best thing to do at this point is modify the root web.config and allow errors to show.
The info you see when that page it hit right now shows you how to add the correct string.
    All the best,
    Mark

  7. Hi Mark,

Ok I'll modify that page and then come back here because I'm sure I'll be getting an error about the album.

Thank you very much for writing back. Hope your here again when I find out the next error.

    Sincerely,
    Patti

  8. Hi Mark,

I modified the webconfig to allow errors to show and I'm getting the same error that I was getting when running the site locally.

Could not find stored procedure 'GetNonEmptyAlbums'.

    Here is the url:
    http://www.websitedesigninnewyork.com/misc/PersonalWebsiteSK/

Is there anyway you could point me to an article perhaps or anything. Any help would really help.

    Sincerely,
    Patti

  9. Thanks so much for the link Mark.

I'm going to work on this tonight.

    Really appreciate your help.

    Sincerely,
    Patti

  10. Hi Mark,

I think the reason the starter kits causes so much confusion is people don't know enough.

Personally I'm using it as a quick fix shortcut to get a photo gallery up for a friend.

I want it to be setup so they handle the photo albums not me.

Here is the site if your curious. I used another starter kit to get it going.

    http://www.strathmoreassociation.com/

My goal is once I can figure this out I can move it over to the above site.

I only know asp, intermediate level, and been trying to learn asp.net. Right now I'm a Web Interface Designer but would like to get a job as a .net programmer.

I have so many books on learning asp.net, C#, SQL server and Database Design. I'm jumping from one book to another. I wish I had more hours in a day because I love this stuff.

I'm just chatting too. I feel guilty because I know I'm trying to take the straight road even though the windy road with all the stops is the better way to go. lol

I will check out your links. Thanks very much for hanging in there with me.

Hope you stay with the show.

If I can't get this to work on my own tutoring as a customer would be great. I don't want it done for me, I need help in learning it.

Thanks a lot for your ongoing helpful posts,

    Patti

  11. I love this conversation, all is good.
    Yes I'm here for ya.
Checking out now, I'm whooped. [IMG]

  12. Hi Mark,

When you go to this link:
    http://community.discountasp.net/default.aspx?f=25&m=8785

When it says to do this:
    b) execute this aspnet_regsql.exe -S [DB Server Name] -U [DB login] -P [Password] -A all -d [Database name]

I tried this before and I got an error when I did it in the command prompt. I believe the error had something to do with 'not found'. I'm at work still so can't try again at the moment.

When I did this line I typed in exactly what is written. Am I supposed to replace with my info? For example where it says

    [DB Server Name]

    should I be putting:

    [sql2k512.discountasp.net] instead?

if so should I also include the brackets?

    Sincerely,
    Patti

  13. Hi Mark,

    I went to the link:
    http://forums.asp.net/p/1100101/2283909.aspx

the post that had this link:
My kit was just recently converted to C# by Steve. It is available at http://www.1steve.co.uk/

came up with an error. :(

    I'm using C#.

Any chance you would know of another link of this type?

Thank you for writing back so hope you do it again.

    I do appreciate it.

  14. Hi Mark,

I checked out the link you posted. Awesome page you created.

I sneaked a look at work today on video #3 you did.

    It was great.

So I do need to replace with my info.

I know that may sound like a duh question but...

In asp sometimes you needed to leave the lingo the way it was. At least that's the way I remember it.

I'm very excited to work on this. I have most of the weekend.

    Thanks so much.

You should join lvsonline.com as a teacher.

I mention that because I learned my web design skills from the company. The courses are cheap and really good. Perfect equation for me.

Don't know what they pay the teachers but a course in asp.net starter kits would be great to have. I think there is a need for that.

From the link you sent I think your a really good teacher.

    Sincerely,
    Patti

One of the DASP employeeswho cooperates with me to get these videos on-line recently suggested that I use Paypal.
So in the near future I may do that...A little donation button.</o:p>
    I'm not the kind of guy who holds his hand out but having no income is rather depressing. <v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o:preferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><v:path o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><v:shape style="VISIBILITY: visible; WIDTH: 11.25pt; HEIGHT: 11.25pt; mso-wrap-style: square" id=Picture_x0020_1 alt=";-)" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1025"><v:imagedata o:title=";-)" src="file:///C:\Users\Mark\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image001.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape>

  16. Hi Mark,

Wow you have three. I have one and I am always trying to stay above water. sometimes I think I'm sinking. lol

Being a stay at home parent I think you need to be creative in earning money. You do have very good teaching skills. You should look into utilizing that. Another online company that I've used as a student, a bit pricey for a student, but for you as a teacher that might be something to look into. It's http://www.hwg.org.

I followed your video and everything worked fine.

Then I proceeded setting up a user for the 'Administrators'.

But I'm still getting the error. ugh!

If I zip the files and email to you, could you check them out and let me know what I'm doing wrong? I have paypal. I trust that you will keep my password private. If you can do this let me know what your fee would be. You can write me directly if you want at: [email protected]

    Two Important needs:
    - I want it to be using C#
    - I need to know where I went wrong. I want to learn what I'm doing wrong.

When you have a chance let me know what you think about this.

    Thanks Mark for your help.

  17. Hi,
I never saw that site before but yes I could teach most of what they are doing there.</o:p>
    </o:p>
You can e-mail any files that you need help with and I'll take a look at them.

msftwise.com is one of the servers DASP provides me with, for Technical Evangelism.</o:p>
They trust me fully, as do hundreds of the customers here by now.</o:p>
I never keep any of the customers code, once they tell me things are working I delete my copies.</o:p>
My dev system gets messy enough as it is just sorting out my own projects.</o:p>
I've been testing for Microsoft since the late 80's, it still continues.</o:p>

  18. Hi Mark,

I sent you an email with a zip of my files. It's 6 megs. So don't know if your email program can handle that.

So if you don't get it I can post a link to the zip.

    Thanks,
    Patti

  19. Hi,
I have been outside all day with the kids, great day here.
Received your file, will look at it tomorrow, I'm dead tried. [IMG]
    All the best,
    Mark

  20. Great. Thanks Mark.

  21. Hi,
I got it working for ya.</o:p>
You did most things correctly, just left a few things out and your connections in your web.config were a bit messy.</o:p>
    </o:p>
I'll e-mail the details to you with the modified web.config settings.</o:p>
    </o:p>
btw, I appreciate your willingness to Paypal me for this but this one is on me, no charge.
    All the best,
    Mark</o:p>

  22. Hi Mark,

Thank you sooo much. At least I got right knowing where I was going wrong. lol

Just to make sure I could do it myself I backed up my database then started from scratch and added the personal-add.sql.

Everything is working great. And thanks for the web.config connections. I put your clean code into my file.

You have been so much help and I truly appreciate.

Now I can move forward and hopefully learn more before I get stuck again:)

    Sincerely,
    Patti

  23. Patti - You should be able to get a download of JW's site in C# at my site - I've just put it back up again www.1steve.co.uk

  24. Hi Steve,

Thanks very much for the post.

I registered and look forward to downloading the C# version.

I'm sure it will help me.
