  1. I'm interested in starting a phpBB board. From other providers' sites, they make it sound pretty easy to get up and running (as they do most of the work for you to install.) I just noticed that you (discountasp.net) now have this as an install.

If I do this, I'll need to update to Windows 2008/IIS7... is it worth it? Does this cost money? Is there downtime?

    Is it easy to install?

After it's installed, where will the website be?
    mydomain.com/forum/

The bottom line is... I'm clueless, I don't want to spend a lot of time getting it going, so I'm just curious if I should try to go the discountasp.net / phpBB way, or head off to another provider more specialized in this. Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ernie

  2. Hi,
Send Support a message and you you can migrate to IIS7.
DASP doesn't specialize in PHP but the Microsoft IIS7 team has done a lot of work to make PHP run better on IIS7.
Yes when you install phpBB it will be a good idea to use a specific folder for it.

I don't see any trouble and my guess is IIS7 will be better for you.
    All the best,
    Mark

  3. If you wanted to use the automated install we provide in the Web Application Gallery, you'd have to migrate to Windows 2008 IIS7, which is free, but there's a small chance you'll have to make changes to your web application if there are errors after the migration.

If you don't want to go through the migration, you can still use PHPBB3 in your current server, but you can't use our Web Application Gallery installer. You'd have to download PHPBB3 to your computer, and then upload it and run through the installation process.

  4. Hi, I'm back. I've been playing with phpBB on another server and love it. I'd like to use it here... ok, to my question...

What options do I have here with regards to a database. I'd ideally not want to spend the extra money each month for SQL server. Is there another option? Is this other option available in the automated install script?

P.S. As I get more familiar with other web hosting providers, I really think you guys do a great job here.

    Thanks,
    Ernie

    Afraid not.

Generally speaking (phpBB doesn't support this), you can use an Access database for your own application if you don't want to pay for SQL, but we don't really recommend it.

  6. Thanks for the reply! I think I'll give SQL Server a try. I suppose being able to get at the data easily with a remote managment tool will be nice bonus.
