PORT 587 -- How can you not tell your users!!

If you can't use Port 25 isn't that a problem with your ISP?

I'm using Port 25 in Outlook 2007 and Eudora for my SmarterMail accounts.

Because this is such a common problem Eudora has an option now to enable Port 587.

The Port # for SMTP is set by the Host Server. In using the SMTP for sending e-mail from my web site Port 25 does not work, it has to be set to Port 587.

 

The port number is a very basic piece of information for using e-mail SMTP. How is it this tid-bit of information is not in any piece of documentation I can find or OPEN!! That last tidbit is pointed for a purpose ... The SmarterMail help information will not even open on my computer!!! So I don't even know if that information is there. It took me 1hr45m searching forums to find out the answer!!!

There was not an SMTP port change. Both port 25 and 587 are valid, and always have been, even on the legacy mail system. 25 is the default, but as Mark pointed out, a lot of ISPs now block port 25 in an effort to reduce spam. So 587 is offered as an alternative. It is in our Knowledge Base: http://kb.discountasp.net/article.aspx?id=10404

SmarterMail help is just a URL - http://help.smartertools.com/SmarterMail/v4/ so I'm not sure why you can't open it from your computer.
