  1. If I choose to migrate over to 2008 will the users in my 2005 database also be migrated over as logins?

  2. Which users are you referring to?

If you're referring to the SQL Logins that you create through the Control Panel, these will have to be recreated in the new database, as these aren't carried over.

The SQL logins are server specific, and since SQL 2005 and 2008 are on different servers, they would not be on the new server.

  3. That's kind of how I thought it would be, but wanted to make sure.

    Thanks!

  4. Should I expect any performance increase after migrating to SQL 2008? Are the 2008 servers better provisioned?

That's a difficult question to answer because database performance depends on a lot of factors, most of which have nothing to do with the server hardware or O/S. If there are database architecture problems, indexing or query issues, a move won't make much difference.

In performance generally, I think you could say that a move from 2000 to 2008 might be a noticeable improvement, but the 05 to 08 move may be less noticeable. That's not based on any concrete numbers, but rather seeing what people have said here in the forum.

  6. Thanks for the information. My database is a canned application database and is well designed, so I guess the real benefit is an additional 200 MB of database storage.

  7. Yea, I would have to say that the additional 200mb would be the main reason of choosing SQL 2008
