  1. I noticed that my db recovery model is set to "simple" - can this be changed for discountasp hosted dbs?

we recommend against changing this setting because it may quickly fill up your transaction log.

Since we do not provide restoration with transaction log, simple recover should be sufficient.

  3. So the closest restore would be back to the previous night full back up?

That would be all that we would be able to provide, yes.

  5. Do you know of customerswho run a backup routine of the hosted db,using a locally installed sql server?

I do know thatI can always go in my website files, copy the previous backup to my local machine, and run a newbackup. Just checking as far as what I can automate from my side as a precaution.

I believe your backup is only retained for 7 days before the new back up starts overwriting an old one - right? Due to the function of our db, sometimes more than 7 days go by between uses, andbefore we would notice if something catastrophic hadhappened. I that case, all the backups that you have would be after the catastrophe - right?

Depends on what kind of database you're using. The Control Panel API has been used to perform automated database backups (look for the posts here in the forum), but if you are using SQL 2008 the API does not yet address that, only 2000 and 2005. 2008 is scheduled to be added to the API in the first quarter of this year.

You are correct that the oldest database backup is removed each day, so only the most recent backups (typically 7 days) are available.
