Sending email from thunderbird/outlook not working

I'm currently having issue sending email with the new setup. From home i can email just fine with the settings given on the website. but at the office where i really need it i can only receive. When i try to send i get this error 'The specified server was found, but there was no response from the server'. It could be a router/dsl modem issue but i dident have the issue before. I've tried both thunderbird and outlook. any suggestion on how to fix this? btw i am able to ping the smtp server if that matters
