Slow download speeds anyone?

I reviewed the ticket you mentioned.

I found that we have tested the page with an outside service (http://www.netmechanics.com) and the result was fast.

I also tried to pull up a webpage and it's loading up fine.

The trace you see is normal, 90 ms is typical response time when you go across the country. For example, 300ms is typical when you hop from LA to Japan.

Can someone on the forum try pull up the URL and see if you have any latency? Cryowizard, if you don't mind, can you post a test URL.

Did that twice (follows below). They say they dont see anything wrong. I also ran a tracert to a download server in Chicago that works really fast. From what I could see, as soon as the packet hits Anaheim CA network the latency jumps from about 20ms to 90 and 110. The Chicago server that works very well stays in the 20s (if this makes any difference). Last time I heard from support they said they will escalate to SA (ticket# 5918)...

  2. Greetings all.

I have a question to all participants but especially those residing in the North East (NY preferably): what are your download speeds? I've been experiencing slow downloads recently (I host lots of pictures), and people who download them are sitting on T3 lines so it can't be their side. I've performed several tests using high-speed access lines and it all shows an average download speed of a straight jpg file (no asp.net code, no engines etc) at 30Kbytes/sec. This is very slow. Support swears they dont have any problems. They also said they tested access to my stuff using a third-party line and it came out quick. But that line was in Texas...which leads me to believe this may have something to do with geography...if I can't resolve this I'd have to move the site elsewhere...

    Any download numbers for comparison?

    Many thanx
    DM

  5. Thanx for looking into this!

I've posted a test file in www.dmoroz.com/mp3/file.zip. It's a 2.56MB empty wave file renamed a zip. I have just tried to ftp it back to me, here's what I got:

    ftp> get file.zip
    200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for file.zip(2686858 bytes).
    226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 2686858 bytes received in 59.59 seconds 45.09Kbytes/sec.

My DSL line is 1.5M and I have had sustained download speeds of over 170Kbytes/sec. I also want to mention that I and all my friends who complained about slow load times sit in NY on very fast lines from work (T1 and up).

Is there a third-party site like netmechanics that can test the access using NY networks?

    Regards
    DM

I just tried to download the file with my home DSL computer

    It's downloading at 150KB / sec

I'll see if i can find anything like netmechanics in NY.

Just so you know, we host many sites from all over the world and rarely do we get complaint about download speed. Our servers are housed in one of the Exodus facility in LA, which also house many of the major internet sites (Our contract agreement do not allow us to disclose our neighbor's identities)

  7. Thanx for the site! My download speed while connected to CA/LA is over 100KBytes/s from work (where I am now), although I've had a lot higher download speeds here (close 400Kbytes/s is not uncommon). I guess it all depends on a server, but even with this result my site over here at dasp is slower: here are results from an upload I just did. File size is 30M.

    ftp> put pix.zip
    200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for pix.zip.
    226 Transfer complete.
    29712542 bytes sent in 406.25 seconds (73.14 Kbytes/sec)

I'll try DSLReports net test from my home DSL line tonight and will post again.

    Best regards
