SMTP connection issues

I set up me e-mail account for the first time today. Using webmail works fine - I can send and recieve between asp.net mail and yahoo mail using the web. However when I try to send from an e-mail client (both Outlook 2003 and Pocket outlook, I get errors with the SMTP server. The "Test connection" button in outlook also produces errors for sending a test e-mail, but not for connecting to the server.

Usually it is the "connection interrupted" message, but sometimes it has been unable to find server, server did not respond, etc. I have searched the forums and the KB and tried solutions listed there but to no avail. These same clients use Yahoo POP3 access with no problem, and it seems the settings are mostly the same.

Any thoughts?

 

I think I figured it out. SBC (my ISP)is listed on the page about blocked SMTP (http://kb.discountasp.net/article.aspx?id=10015). I switched smtp to the setting listed there and it worked.

What is odd is it didnt work from my mobile either (Sprint - which is obviously a different ISP), but I switched it to use the SBC SMTP and now it works too (although a little slowly).
