  1. Hi Dean,
I'm a Technical Evangelist for DiscountASP.NET and create examples on three DASP servers for customers here.
Something new I've been working on are these Webcasts:
    http://iis7test.com/webcasts/

Any new Webcast requests are welcome.

SQL Server is something I've been working with for about 9 years now, and I enjoy it.
Creating Webcasts on how to use SQL Server here is a good idea, for many customers.

Currently DASP offers SQL Server 2000, 2005 and the new 2008.
Version 2000 should be considered for the backburner, any and all accounts should move up to the newer versions.
I've done that for many accounts here, free of charge...Migrating their accounts from one DB to another.

Whatever you need help with...Just say the word. [IMG]
As for Access or SQL Server, you have been told correctly, SQL Server is the best option.
Access can still be used along side SQL Server for some tasks, junk collecting as I often call it. (Security methods.)

  3. Hi,
This link doesn't work for you? http://iis7test.com/webcasts/
    Salute,
    Mark

Note: If the link works but the video formats don't work I can always add other formats, per request.
So far there have been no requests for formats other than WMV and Silverlight streaming.

  4. You are right, the link works but I can not play video. I have Vista operating system if that helps. Yes I would like to see the videos, mainly the one on getting my database working on the web.

  5. I have SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition with my Visual Studio 2008 and have created some non-profit WEB database system that work fine on my computer but when I Copy them to discount Asp.net Web hosting I get a 26 error. I followed the insturctions on discount Asp.net web help to detach database and used control panel to hook up database and get message back that everything is fine. After three months and 5 books on the subject and many help request to discount Asp.net I still do not have the answer. The first one is always the hardest!!

I am a old programmer that is retired but a life time learner and would like to have some help.

If I could see an example of a simple program I know I would find my way.

I am a teacher now and want to create some databases for non-profits.

I would perfer to work with Access Databases but all I read tell me I need to use SQL 2005.

  6. Hi Dean,
I develop everything on a Vista system, Intel Dual SLI, Visual Studio 2008 Pro, Camtasia Studio 5.

I'll try and create another format for Webcast #08 for you today, as a test.

PS - I have never owned or used an Apple system. [IMG]

  7. Hi,
    Which Browser are you using?
The default video formats I'm using work best in IE but they can be enabled in Firefox also.
Our logs on the test server show visitors using IE for the most part, then Firefox and some are using Safari.
(I only run tests in IE8 and FF3, on my Vista box.)

Something I should have put a link to on the Webcasts pageare the Camtasia Codecs.
    http://www.techsmith.com/download/codecs.asp

Lossless Windows video codec (File size: 170 KB)
    http://download.techsmith.com/tscc/tscc.exe

Installing those typically takes care of it.

  10. Direct Link worked for vedios and I listen and followed your instructions. You said nothing about Detaching database before copying it to website. I am learning so I created a small database system that just tracks the books that I have read. It has one report and one way to add-delete-update a record. It works fine on my computer. But when I load it onto my website it get the old 26 error. In your first vedio I could not understand how you was able to look at your database on the website with all the other database that other people have out there? I did everything as you said and still can not get it to work. In other system that I have worked with they have allowed me to develope directly on my website, not a good idea but I do not like getting something to work on my local computer and then that working on my website.

www.deanliming.com is my website and I am still trying to get it to work after three months of work.

Still need help I am missing one peice of information that is keeping me from doing what I want.

  11. Hi,
I've created diferent webcasts for diferent aspects, that continues.
In that video I didn't cover detaching because it was not necessary in that case, VWD to a remote SQL Server.

Note: I am not paid for this, I am not a DiscountASP.NET employee.
This is something I do free of charge, from my home. [IMG]

Please give me a better understanding of where you are with your project and I'll do my best to help.
Detail which tools/versions you used and exactly what you would like to accomplish.

  12. I am a database person and all I want to do is create databases on the Internet like person databases to track books I have read, non-profit databases like one www.benfieldchristianchurch.com that will track members of that church throught history. Databases that can be used to display pictures in groups like wedding, retirement, reunions, and others. I have a lot of examples and have gotten many of them to work fine on my computer but not the Web. I bought Visal Studio 2008 and created most of what I want but when I try to get a web hosting to put them on I have the same problem. I have tired more than one hosting.

I liked Focus Database and had them working on OS/2 servers just fine but not on the Web. I had many databases on AS/400 or E machine as it is called now. I have done mainframe Database and know SQL and all the update statements and inter joins and outer joins.

I love math and will be going to a Conference on Mathematica where all the math people from all over the world will meet to go over the latest computer math programs.

I do not get paid either but everthourght I am retired I still like to do things like teach at local high schools as a sub and create database for learning and for non-profit.

I do not need someone to program for me Ijust need to know how to get it to work onthe web like I can on my computer.

I do not have 50 or 500 thousand dollars to spent on a full version of Microsoft SQL2008 server and will give uptrying if I can not get some book or help from DiscountASP.NET. I have 5 books I have paid for out of my own pocket and like I saythe stuff works on my computer but when I put it on the Web hosting it gives me errors.

I have been trying for three years to get a simple database working on the Web and have no JOY!!

    Dean Liming MBA

    I am 63 years Old.

Will be going to a Christian Men retreat for the next few days out of town so I can read some of my email on my iPhone but will have to wait until I get home to keep trying to get it done ( a database with add-update-delete on the Web Hosting.

  13. Hi Dean,
