My current host, RackSpace, is going to start charging me $5 per month per 100 MB for SQL Server storage starting Oct 1. They say Microsoft bills them for SQL Server based on the disk space used, and they're passing the cost to me. They insist that the 50GB of disk space I buy each month was only for web files and SQL files are different. They insist that they've been giving me the disk space for free up to this point. They also charge me $20 a month just for access to SQL Server. Do you do such a thing, or do you charge a single price for all disk space used? Does MSoft really charge hosting companies for disk space used by SQL Server in addition to a licensing fee? I think RackSpace is just trying to dump its ASP.NET customers...
Nevermind. I see you charge $10 for 1000 MB of sql storage. That's still 5 times cheaper than RackSpace...right?
Depends on which SQL Server version you are using. If you're talking about SQL Server 2012, then it's 7X cheaper according to the information you provided: RackSpace: $20/month for access + $50/month for 1000MB (1GB) of SQL Server disk space = $70/month DiscountASP.NET: $10/month for the same thing I haven't checked RackSpace to verify this information though. Just going by the information you provided.
Typically the Microsoft Service Provider Licensing Agreement (SPLA) is a monthly fee that is on a per CPU, per core or per user basis. We also do not host websites and SQL databases on the same server so that is why our disk space and sql disk space is separate.
I also host at Rackspace Cloud Sites. They run sql server 2012 enterprise edition in a cluster. I would imagine the costs are higher due to that infrastructure for HA and performance (shared storage for cluster). For my heavy hitting traffic sites, I use Rackspace.
